New Bremen holds

USAC sprints Aug.25

NEW BREMEN, Ohio — The USAC sprints make their final appearance of the season with the running of the twin 50’s on New Bremen Speedway’s halfmile paved oval Sunday, Aug. 25. The program will be unique in that it will mark the first time semi-inverted starts have been used in a feature race. The first 50-lap feature will use regular straight-up starts with the fastest driver in qualifications beginning on the first row. But in the second 50-lap-per, the first nine cars will be inverted with the winner starting ninth and the ninth place driver on the pole. Speedway Promoters Frank Dicke and John Kemper are expecting a record number of entries for the twin 50’s. In the last program in June, 54 cars attempted qualifications, an alltime record number for the United States Auto Club. The purse for the twin 50’s has been raised to $8,500 in hopes

of luring more cars. The first entry for the program came from defending sprint car champion Greg Weld of Kansas City, Mo. Weld has come on strong in the past month with his last two victories coming in the twin 50’s at Reading, Pa. Other entries include two winners of June’s sprint action at New Bremen, Indianapolis veterans Sammy Sessions and Mike Mosley, who both duelled to less than one car-length victories the last time out in exciting finishes. Besides the two 50-lap main events, qualifications, a four-lap trophy dash and a consolation race make up the card. Time trials are set to get under way at 1 p.m. with the trophy dash set for 2:30. Reserved seats may be obtained in advance by writing or calling the speedway at 629-25nn in New Bremen.
