THREE TOMATOES--Two cute blonde daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Rossok of Greencastle hold onto a giant size tomato their grandfather Joe Allee grew in his rural Greencastle garden. The grandchildren (left) Vicky 5, and Jennifer, 4, sort of helped themselves in the tomato patch. The double headed tomato weighed 2 1 /j pounds. BANNER Photo, Wilbur Kendall. Young America Fair scheduled
Indianapolis, Ind.. National and local talent will headline this year's edition of the Young America Fair, which will run in conjunction with the Indiana State Fair, Aug. 23 through Sept. 2. —Heloise thing to keep the meringue from getting torn up. By sticking toothpicks around the top of my pie and then putting the pie in a plastic bag. my problem was solved. Hallie Ferguson • * • DEAR HELOISE: My kitchen is very small and I was just desperate f6r shelf space. So my father cut the plaster board out between wall studs over my stove and sink (as there were no windows over either one). He then lined the opening with thin wooden paneling and put small shelves in this space for my spices, etc. He did the same to the wali in the stairwell of the basement steps, but covered this with a door the thickness of the plaster board. Then painted it the same color as the wall. This area holds my brooms, mops, etc. Really has been a wonderful feeling to have all this extra room. Mrs. Mac • • • DEAR HELOISE: Know how I clean my plastic flowers and ivy ? In the washing machine! I throw’ them in with a little detergent and swish them around for about five minutes or so on the DELICATE cycle. Take ’em out and rinse them in the sink so they won’t spin dry. This is a simple way and gets my flowers much cleaner than washing them by hand. Mrs. J. W. Powell
In addition to talent, excitement, sound, color and kids, there are several added attractions this year. A sky ride will leave the ground just west of the Young America Fair and will travel above the road north of the fairgrounds race track until it decends again between the Conservation and the Farmer's Building. The spirit of Hollywood will hit the fairgrounds as the Young America Fair launches the teenbe equiped with tables, chairs, concessions and continuous live music. The Penny Arcades of a decade ago will again grace the scene as the Young America Fair devotes an entire tent to the gaming recreation of the teenagers. Included among tne local talent which will be providing the sounds to which the kids can "swing" are the Younger Brothers, the Boys Next Door, the Olivers, the Joys of Life, the Dawn, the Idle Few, and the Shy Ones. Bobby Goldsboro will head the nationally-known talent scheduled to appear at the fair. Goldsborro will appear Sunday, Aug. 25. Sunday, Sept. 1, will be "Oldies But Goodies Day," featuring big hit groups of five and six years ago. The teen competition remains one of the most important factors of the "Fair within a Fair," and this year will see more contests than ever before. Added to the pie, watermelon, hot dog eating, freckle, drum, cheerleader and talent contest, will be a turtle race, a basketball contest, a "Dump Bozo” and Swingin' Gyms." The 1968 Young America Fair promises "Bigger, better and more fun than ever before."

How does Social Security help father when his wife dies?
Fair to host Kochman
What would father’s financial burden be if mother should die? Recent statistics compiled by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the Social Security Administration points out during the first five years following a mother’s death, a typical family would face $2, 500 funeral expenses, $10,500 for housekeeping salary and $3, 000 other additional expenses for baby-sitting etc. for a total around $16,000. Statistics might vary from family to family, but these figures point out the plight of many young and middle-aged husbands faced with the care of a family of motherless children through the tragic and premature death of the wife and mother. Because ofauto accidents, early deaths due to cancer, heart Remains in hospital NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (UPI)— Rep. Richard L, Roudebush will remain in a LaGrange, Ga., hospital for at least two more weeks to recuperate from injuries suffered in a plane crash near there Friday in which six persons were hurt. Mrs. Audrey Watkins, secretary in Roudebush’s Noblesville office, said Roudebush had decided to stay, possibly because he feared his recovery might be slowed if he were transferred to Riverview Hospital here and had many visitors and problems connected with his office and campaign for reelec, tion. Kenneth Biddle, Sheridan, pilot of the plane carrying the group from the Republican National Convention at Miami Beach, has been released from the intensive care ward at the hospital and is improving. Biddle was an alternate delegate to the convention. Needlepoint News

disease and other ailments, these sad situations are increasing in number. The 1967 amendments to the Social Security Act have recognized the need for relief in these situations, and have liberalized the requirements for father to draw social security benefits for children. Formerly, in order for children to receive benefits on the mother’s account, the children must have been dependent on the mother for part of their support. For children to have been considered dependent upon their deceased mother, she must have worked at least half the time in the three years before her death in work covered by social security or have been furnishing one-half of the support. This did not seem fair because the children were not receiving financial protection even though the mother had worked a good deal before the children were born. The 1967 amendments have recognized the families’ needs, and children may now receive benefits on their mother’s account in the same situations as
on their father’s account. To illustrate this point, young Mr. Worker came to the social security office in late 1966 to see if there were any benefits payable upon the death of his 30-year old wife, who had left him with three children children, ages 5, 2, and 1. Since Mrs. Worker had left her job, in order to stay home and give her children the best care possible, she had not worked half the time out of the last three years. Therefore, the children were not considered dependent on her. She had worked long enough before she quit her job for us to be able to tell the bereaved father that a small payment was available to help with the burial expenses, but there were no monthly benefits payable to the children. As there was no grandmother or other relative who could care for the children, Mr. Worker had the added financial strain of paying a baby-sitter to care for the children while he was at work. In addition, he had the duty of trying to be part-time baby-sitter, seamstress, tutor,
housekeepter and cook for the children. But now we have good news for Mr. Worker. If he, and all the fathers who are left in like situations, will bring the children’s birth certificates to the district office at Terre Haute, or the nearest social security office, they may file an application and receive monthly payments until all the children are age 18, and up to age 22 if they continue in school. Let’s say Mrs. Worker’s monthly benefit would have been $107.70 at the time of her death. This a moderate amount, as social security benefits now run. Then Mary Ann, Sally, and Tommy would each be eligible to receive $60 a month beginning February 1968, or a total of $180 a month. Since Mary Ann is now 7, Sally 4, and Tommy 3, these payment would amount to more than $30,000 by the time Tommy is age 18. There would also be monthly payment for four more years for each of the children if they continue in school until age 22, according to the Social Security Administration.
Indianapolis, Ind. The Jack Kochman Hell Drivers will return to the Indian S turn to the Indiana State Fair this year to thrill fans with their dare devil auto stunts, Aug. 28 through Sept. 2. The Hell Driver show is a blend of expert driving skill, nerves of steel and occasional comedy. Comic relief is given by clown, Dave Proudman, an expert performer and driver despite his baggy pants and goofy antics. H e often allows autos to come within a fraction of an inch of running him down. Though some of the stunts which the Hell Drivers perform are highly dangerous, drivers are protected from death by their own skill, safety equipmen and sturdy vehicles but the thrill are there.
