Three mathematics teachers from the Greencastle Community Schools have been awarded National Science Foundation stipends and are studying this summer in the University of Illinois Committee on School Mathematics Institutes at the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois. Joseph Frisz of the Junior High School staff is in the group studying UICSM First Course, which is the content of the special seventh and eighth grade classes introduced into Greencastle’s mathematics program last year with the assistance of Miss Gertrude Hendrix, Mathematics Consultant to t h e Greencastle schools. This summer’s preparation in Urbana will enable Frisz to continue with this part of Greencastle’s new mathematics program. Miss Jane Holcomb of the Senior High School staff, having taken First Course in Urbana in the summer of 1967, is studying UICSM Second Course, one of the point-set geometries for high school students developed by the UICSM with the support of the Carnegie Corporation o f New York. Miss Holcomb will be working with Miss Hendrix during the coming year in Greencastle’s first venture with this new tenth grade course. Walter Jeffries, head of the mathematics department in Greencastle Junior High School, is studying the new UICSM seventh and eighth grade materials for under achievers in mathematics at that level. This project, inaugurated in 1962, has been tested extensively in the

inner city schools of New York City, Philadelphia, Memphis, Los Angeles, and Honolulu, and with outstanding success. Many other kinds of localities are represented among the seventy participants in this sevenweeks institute. Jeffries will be teaching two classes of the seventh grade course during the coming year, assisted in one of them by the consultant, Miss Hendrix. This UICSM-NSF institute awards provide stipends for participants, plus an allowance for dependents and travel expenses. Each institute group is housed in a new, air-conditioned dormitory located near the air-con-ditioned classrooms assigned to the institute classes. Mr. Frisz and Miss Holcomb are in the group whose work began on July 1; Mr. Jeffries is in the group whose work began on July 8. Professor Max Beberman himself is teaching the three-hour morning sessions of this second group, all sessions being videotaped by a television crew from Minnesota. Many of the participants in this institute will be conducting in-service training conducting in-service training seminars for other teachers during the coming year, and will be hoping to use some of the videotapes as aids. DePauw University is assisting the local schools financially in these developments of new mathematics courses, and all classes in the UICSM courses are open for observation to the graduate students in DePauw’s Master of Arts in Teaching program in mathematics.

Three former club champions including defending titlist Ben Hoover are in a field of eight Windy Hill Country Clubs members that will pair off for round 3 of the annual club championship tournament this weekend. At least one of the former winners will be eliminated in the 3rd round as Hoover and 3time champion Herschel Hammond square off. Hoover won his first title in 1962, following up with last years crown. Herschel Hammond collected his first place finishes in 1958 and back to back titles in 1960-61. Cousin, C.B. Hammond, winner of the 1959 and 1966 championships will take on Tony Manuel while non-titlists Frank Bundy will verse Don Orlosky and Ray Greve pairs off against Bill McClellan to rounding out the eight

man field.

Three other past title holders, Harold Talbot, a back to back winner in 1963-64 and Bill Eckhardt 1965 winner and Wilson Wheeler the first club champion in 1956 were eliminated in last weeks action. Talbot was knocked from the links by C.B. Hammond 2 and 1, while Frank Bundy got 1 up in 25 holes on

Wheeler. Orlosky stopped Eckhardt 2 and 1. Norman Dunlap Jr. was the only past title holder not entered in this years tourney. In other weekend action, Bob Lyon defeated Rusty Elliott and C.B.Hammond in a throw-out-

Utility bills went up. The totals for electricity, heat, and water amounted to about $3 million, and that was about $160,000 above the totals last year. Telephone and telegraph bills amounted to $1.4 million, an increase of $74,800. Cost of repairs to state-owned motor vehicles also went up, with the total listed at $478,700, compared to $401,700 the year before. Gasoline, oil and other auto fuel and lubricants amounted to $1.9 million, an increase of $160,000. Credit card purchases of gasoline totaled $541,212, an increase of more than $111,000. One puzzling figure did not fit the picture of rising costs of living, however. A spokesman was unable to explain why the expenditures listed for food decreased about $753,000 from 1967 to a 1968 figure of $5.8 million. He suggested “greater efficiency" on the part of state institutions which buy the bulk of such food for their inmates and patients.

By STU CAMEN UPI Sports Writer 7 Few, if any, football clubs relish snow, but the Los Angeles Rams are a unique case. Snow appeared at the Rams’ training camp at Fullerton, Calif., Thursday in the person of starting split end Jack Snow and things immediately brightened for the team many feel has the best chance of ending the Green Bay Packer’s threeyear reign in the National Football League. Snow ended his holdout by coming to terms and, shortly afterward, All-Pro defensive end David “Deacon" Jones, a member of the Rams’ Fearsome Foursome, informed head Coach George Allen he was on his way to camp, his three week holdout at an end. Rams Battle Browns Despite their availability, Snow and Jones will be on the sidelines tonight when the Rams meet the Cleveland Browns at the Coliseum to help kick off a busy weekend of exhibition play. Tonight’s only other game is at St. Louis where the Cardinals tangle with Century Division opponent Pittsburgh. Pat Studstill, acquired in an off-season trade with Detroit, will start in Snow’s split-end position while Gregg Schumacher, a third year man, drew Jones’ left end soot.

Dallas plays at San Francisco and Miami battles Buffalo at Rochester, N.Y., Sunday while on Monday, the New York Jets are at the Astrodome to oppose the Houston Oilers. Road to success impossible dream MIAMI BEACH (UPI)—Richard M. Nixon got the biggest ovation of his acceptance speech when he told about “an impossible dream” that came true. “I see a child,” he said. “He hears the train go by at night and dreams of far away places he would like to go. It seems like an impossible dream. But he is helped on his journey through life. “A father who had to go to work before he finished the sixth grade, sacrificed every, thing so that his sons could go to college. “A gentle, Quaker mother, with a passionate concern for peace, quietly wept when he went to war but understood why he had to go. “A great teacher, a remarkable football coach, an inspirational minister encourage him on his way. A courageous wife and loyal children stood by him in victory and defeat. “In his chosen profession of politics, first scores, then hundreds, then thousands, and finally millions worked for his success. Tonight he stands before you— nominated for president of the United States."
