TERKE HAUTE, Ind. (Special). Bernard “Bucky” Haag, highly successful football coach at Ft. Wayne Dwenger High School the past three years, has been named freshman football coach at Indiana State University. Haag, who has a five-year football coaching record of 34-12 in two different high schools, replaces Dave Bosson, who resigned to go into private business in Vermont. With Bosson’s resignation, the Sycamores’ Bill Quinter was assigned the linecoaching duties and Haag will assume Quinter’s original assignment of the freshman gridiron squad. The newest ISU football coach is
a graduate of Purdue, where he lettered as a defense halfback in 1956, his junior year, and then served as freshman backfield coach during his senior season after receiving an injury in the Boilermakers’ opening contest of the 1957 season. After graduating with his B.S. degree at Purdue in 1958 and his M.S. degree from Indiana State in 1959, Haag took over the football coaching duties as well as the track coaching and athlete letic director's position at Three Oaks, Mich., for two years. His teams played to a 15-3 mark those two seasons. He then moved to South Bend where he was assistant football coasch under Wally Moore at St, Joseph’s High School as well as head track coach. Moore has since become the freshman coach at Notre Dame. Windy scrambles Special To The Banner Officials of the Windy Hill scramble scheduled for Saturday, August 24, have announced Sunday, Aug. 18, as the signup deadline. Every available player is needed to make this tournament successful! say the officials, including the fairer sex, too. The pairings will be held Saturday , Aug. 24 immediately after dinner. A two ball event will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, to start the evening’s festivities, which will include the pairing of the scramble and possibly music of some type. Join in the fun and plan to attend. 11 could be the largest scramble Windy Hill has ever assembled.
Haag then became the athletic director, football and track coach at Dwenger High School in Ft. Wayne. After a 4-5 season in his first year there, his teams compiled 6-3 and 9-1 records the next two years.
WEST CENTRAL INDIANALargemouth bass are continuing to provide plenty of action at Monroe Reservoir from deep water. Also, lots of bluegills and a few channel catfish are being caught. Good bluegill and crappie fishing at Cataract Lake is quite good, and fisherman also are taking a few bass from deep water.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (UPI)Saturday’s second annual NorthSouth Indiana high school football “All Star” game could be a wide open scrap-if you listen to the coaches. Both Jack Jarrett of the North and Rick Carter of the South were cautiously optimistic. “We’ll give them some offensive problems, I’m sure,” said Carter, Earlham’s head coach. “We can pass or run and will play the type offense dictated by the game,” retorted Jarrett, of Manchester. They faced each other as opposing coaches last year, too, when the South eked out a 15-14 last-period victory. The game, sponsored for char-
Sycamore coach Jerry Huntsman stated, “Bucky Haag certainly brings a record of football success with him...we feel he is a great addition to our staff.”
Bass from deep water and some bluegill and crappie fishing is the story at Raccoon Lake. On Big Raccoon Creek below Mansfield Dam, smallmouth bass and channel catfish are hitting on catalpa worms. Fisherman are taking limits of bluegills at Green Valley Fishing Area in Vigo County near Terre Haute.
ity by the Indiana Boys Clubs, will be played in the Indiana University Stadium before an estimated 15,000 fans. The South’s awesome backfield speed prompted Jarrett to say he feels his 11 best players should be on defense. Carter returned the compliment by saying he fears Gary Froebel’s All-State star Levi Mitchell and his outside running. Bob Hackleman of North Central Indianapolis will call the signals for the South, Steve Murphy of Wabash for the North. The South has a pair of 9.7 dashmen in the backfield, Sammy Carter of Indianapolis Brebeuf and Alan Dick of Jasper.
