DEAR HELOLSE: How in this world do you keep butter from burning in a skillet when pan-frying a steak ? 1 fry many things in butter, but it always burns before the cube melts. Molly Mayberry Dear Molly: There really is a secret when you are going to pantry or saiit/‘ anything in butter and here is what I learned from a famous French cook who uses it in most of his cooking. Always put a wee hit of vegetable oil in the bottom of your skillet first. As soon as it gets hot, then put your dabs of butter in. This way the butter floats on top of the oil, hubbies up (and mixes beautitully) and browns gently without e\er burning. How about that ? 1 thought old Henry was a precious friend when he told me that one, don’t you? Heloise * * * DEAR HELOISE: Hope this hint saves someone from a plumbing bill such as I had lecently. I bought a bathroom deodorizer that comes in the form of a block wrapped in cellophane on a wire hanger. You attach it inside the water tank with the block halfway under water. A few days later the toilet refused to flush and I discovered the deodorant block had been drawn through the flush opening at the bottom of the tank. As this block dissolves, the wire no longer holds it securely and it falls off. Well, I learned my lesson. Now the block is wrapped in a piece of nylon net and the net is securely fastened to the wire hanger which is hooked over the side of the tank. This way there is no danger of the block falling off and being flushed info the opening. As the block becomes smaller, it stays safely inside the net Betty Lou

DEAR HELOISE: I am a business executive's wife who must go out quite a few times each week. Recently I bl oke my arm and it has to be in a cast for two months. So I went to the store and

bought large chiffon headscarfs to use as slings. Then when I wear a black dress I use a black scarf, with a red dr< ss I use a red one. etc. They' are much more attractive than heavy cloth slings. LETTER OF LAUGHTER DEAR HELOISE: In between folding t w o loads of clothes, cleaning up a salt mess, breaking up two fights and “delivering” a litter of kittens yesterday, I discovered the most marvelous way . . . DEAR HELOISE. This is to let you know of a man’s way for making floor scrubbing much easier. 1 recently had a day off from work and decided to help my wife with her Friday cleaning by washing the kitchen and bedroom floors on my hands and knees. At first my knees became ied and raw and I decided there must be a less punishing way of completing the task. So decided to make use of the knee pads I used when on a basketball team. I just slipped them on and proceeded to ijpeed up and make the job almost easy. A small investment in these cloth covered, foam rubber pads will make this job easier for your wife. Robert C. Benzing * * * Save** YOU from doing the floor, too! Doesn’t it? Heloise
