British to try harder
NEW YORK (UPI) — The British report a new zest in boating and boatbuilding in that country stemming from a number of recent feats by British yachtsmen. These British triumphs include two solo, world-circling voyages in sailing craft by Francis Chichester and Alec Rose, both of whom later were honored with knighthood, and a victory by Geoffrey Williams in record time in the 1968 sin-gle-handed trans-Atlantic race. According to a word from London, this surge of enthusiasm in pleasure boating will be reflected in the British exhibits this year at the Marine Trades Exhibition in Chicago, Sept. 19-22. New boats, new ideas to improve established craft and new equipment of every kind will be displayed by some 17
British firms at the show, which is a trade-only exhibit, closed to the public, and presents the first mass unveiling of new industry products and services that will be available in 1969. Among the British products that will interest Americans who like to sail but like power too is a dual purpose cruiser which the manufacturer claims is equally at home under sail or under power with the masts removed. Designed by Ian Hannay, former Olympic helmsman and known as a G-class, the 25*2 foot fiberglass craft has two cabins, each with two berths, a head, galley and open cockpit, and boasts such refinements as an oil-fired range and oil-fired central heating. Conversion from one form to the other is said to take little
time. The mast, which can be fitted into a tabernacle if required. can be removed quickly and all rigging cleared to turn the boat into a motor cruiser. Bermudan or Gunter rigs are available and power is provided by an inboard Waterman diesel engine. Under power, the craft will turn within 40 feet and steering can be either by tiller or wheel. Another new British product that will be shown for the first time in the United States at Chicago is a Beaufort heel boat which is claimed to be a new approach to inflatable boats. The nine-foot boat, unlike conventional inflatable boats, has a built-in fiberglass floor which eliminates loose floorboards and allows the boat to be folded into one complete package. Skegs are molded into the fiberglass bottom to give additional directional stability and protection when beaching. A high-speed, general purpose runabout, it is said to be equally suitable as a ski boat, a safety or club rescue boat or as a yacht tender. The manufacturer says speeds in excess of 40 miles per hour are possible and the boat is capable of planing with four or five people aboard. The company will also show a mini-heel boat—e'-j feet — which has a built-in transom

What’s your answer when your husband says “where?”
Where did the money go? Keeping track of the household money is no easy task, and sometimes you have to be able to prove to your husband (and yourself) just where the money went...or that you paid a bill.
You can see at a glance just where you stand with a Central National Personalized Checking Account. Makes it easier to budget, too. And a check is your receipt for money that’s spent or a bill that’s paid.

While it won't be launched until the 1970 season, the British are building a 71-foot fiberglass yacht which they say is expected to be by far the world's largest to go into series production. The 27 1 2-ton. ketch-rigged Ocean 71 will have a beam of 17 feet and an 8-foot draft. It will be fitted with a 100 horsepower diesel engine. The price tag—$156,000 at

Norris to quarterback South squad Saturday
One of Greencastle's all-time great athletes, DeWayne “Pete” Norris a 1968 graduate, will be one of three quarterbacks on the South squad this Saturday August 10 in the 2nd Annual Indiana Boys Club game at Bloomington. Norris will help the South defend its 14-13 victory last year on the Indiana University grid-
iron. Indianapolis North Central star Bob Hackleman and Plainfield’s Don Casselman will share the signal slot with Norris. The 6-2, 165 pound son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Norris, 601 Apple, piloted the 1966 Tiger Cubs to their first Western Indiana Conference title with a 6-0
league mark and an 8-2 winning season. That year Norris ranked third in scoring with 30 points on two touchdowns and 18 extra points, and was named to the W.LC. honorable mention list. His 37 pass completions on 87 attempts for 604 yards ranked him high in the state. Last season Pete guided the
Tigers to a 7-3 season record and second in the W.I.C. with a 4-2 mark. His 5 touctidowns a field goal, and 13 points afters earned him 46 points and second in scoring to Jay Frye's 8 touchdowns. Norris’ 30 of 73 passing attempts netted the Cubs 385 yards in the air, giving him 67 of 160 completions for 985 yards in his junior and senior
Raceway park to host richest national drags
INDIANAPOLIS, IND., AUG. 5The largest cash purse in the history of drag racing $150,350 has been posted for the 14th annual National Championship Drag Races at Indianapolis Raceway Park August 29 through September 2. The record-breaking figure was announced this week by Wally Parks, president of the National Hot Rod Association which sanctions and produces the annual event, largest motor sports contest in the world. “This year’s purse is another milestone for NHRA drag racing,” Parks said. “It certainly is a far cry from just a few short years ago, when participants received only trophies to go along with the prestige of winning at the Nationals.” Parks also pointed out that drag racing now ranks on an equal level with other major forms of motor sports competition. He said that more than 4 million spectators who viewed NHRA-sanctioned events in 1967 was a major factor in helping
automobile racing maintain its number two place for attendance among other sports in the nation. In addition to a record-break-ing purse, the Nationals event this year is expected to draw its biggest entry field. Nearly 1,000 entry requests representing competitors from more than 30 states—already have been processed at NHRA Headquarters in Los Angeles, and an additional 500 is expected by the time activity gets underway on August 29. Because of the overwhelming requests, NHRA officials have been forced to screen all entry applications and limit the final number of acceptances to 1500. The screening process is based upon acknowledging competitors who regularly support NHRA’s sanctioned drag strips, its World Championship Series and other major meets, thus ensuring a top quality field of participants. Entries are expected from all of the sport’s top stars including defending champion Don Garlits of Seffner, Fla., only driver to win the Nationals twice.
