Early this morning, about 6 a.m., National Park Service workers were spraying trees in the White House south grounds as a protection against insects and plant disease. The spray crew was moving around the circular driveway spraying the trees next to the White House when a tall man in pajamas emerged on the second floor balcony in an angry mood. It seems that on a cool night President Johnson had been sleeping with his ‘ bedroom window open and awakened to find insect spray floating into the room. The President suggested rather firmly that the men spray elsewhere. They did. DEAR HELOISE: If you have a child starting to school for the first time this fall, why not start NOW with a "summer traffic safety program." (I know it worked wonders with our soh last year.» Appoint the child to be your “traffic officer" for the summer months. After an explanation of traffic laws and signals. begin to take him shopping as much as possible. Let him decide when to cross the street. This "on-the-job training" will give you an opportunity to see how the child will react to various situations. Compliment him when he does his job well and correct him when he uses poor judgement. Teach him that traffic safety is the responsibility of everyone. I feel that my time and efforts were well-spent and my son was so much better educated in traffic safety after having practiced all during the summer before starting to school. He enjoyed our "training program", too. Mrs. Douglas Bean * * * Great: A Wonderful safety hint. Ileloise * * * LETTER OF THOUGHT DEAR HELOISE; Why is it so many housewives drape their bedclothes out the window or on a railing of a balcony to iiir? Not only is this unsightly and detrimental to the appearance of the neighborhood, but is really quite silly when you think of the dust they pick up from the outside! Hope this may help to "stamp out" window drapers. Q. U. Z.
Dear Folks: When you discard an old girdle or garter lielt, always take your scissors and cut off those supporters and all the good elastic that you can use elsewhere. Hull ’em up and Curiosity kills DENVER (UPI)—Officials at the zoo don’t know whether to run up a pink or blue flag to herald the arrival of a three-day-old hippopotamus. They haven’t been able to get close enough to determine whether it’s a he or a she. “When you’ve got a couple of tons of ‘mother love’ protecting that little one, you just don’t stand a chance,” zoo Director Julian Frazier explained.

tuck them away in your sewing ho.\. I found that the metal part of a supporter is fantahulotis to sew on a corner of a pot holder! Sure is easy to put on the nail where we hang ’em. They don’t rust, either. A n y h o d y got any more ideas? If so, do write to us in care of this pa|ier. We’d love to hear from you. Ileloise * # DEAR HELOISE: If your iced tea or lemonade pitcher lacks an ice guard at the lip, cut a double-thickness circle of nylon net a couple of inches larger than the top and tape or rubber band it over the top of your pitcher. Great . . . just pour away and you have no ice bits or cubes dropping "plop-splash" into your glass. My pitcher, tall and green, is quite festive with its "cap" of orange net. Mrs. M. McKay Continued on Page 6 Brando wins divorce suit SANTA MONICA, Calif. (UPI)—Marlon Brando has won an annulment of his 8-year marriage to Mexican actress Movita Castenada on grounds she is still married to a previous husband. Superior Judge Edward Brand granted the annulment last Friday, it was learned, and" awarded the actress custody of the couple’s two children, Sergio, 7, and Rebecca, 2. Brando and Miss Castenada married secretly in 1960. At that time her former husband was reported to be Jack Doyle, an Irish crooner-boxer once threatened with deportation from the United States for violation of immigration laws. Could face five years in prison RAPID CITY, S.D. (UPI) — The daughter of Sen. George McGovern, D-S.D., could be imprisoned five years and fined $5,000 on a charge of illegal possession of narcotics. But chances are good she won’t. Minimum punishment on conviction is two years, and a judge may even suspend that for a first offender, which Teresa McGovern, 19, is. Miss McGovern whose father is running for re-election, and a young man and woman today were free on $2,500 bond each after their motel room was raided by state agents Friday night. Police said they confiscated “a quantity of marijuana and other narcotic paraphernilia,” including some pills and handrolled cigarettes, in the room in which Miss McGovern, Barry Mogin, 19, Silver Springs, Md., and Mary Shanley, 24, Evanston, 111., were arrested.
