Mr. and Mrs. Tom Janson and children, Rockford, m., and Dorothy Bittis, Cincinnati, were weekend house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bettis. Sunday the above named people and Mrs. Maude O’Haver attended a birthday in honor of Mrs. Nelle Bettis at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Linda Simpson, Mr. Simpson and children, Indianapolis. All of Mrs. Bettis’ family, with the exception of her daughter Joy Zapf, Oregon, were present for the occasion. Her great granddaughter, Malissa Zapf arrived in Indianapolis by

plane last Tuesday for an extended visit with relatives. Recent visitors of Mrs. O.M. Thomas were Mrs. Ivyl McGaughey, Russellville, last Sunday afternoon, and Mrs. Georgia Martin and Mrs. Nell Thomas one evening last week. Mrs. L.L. Sparr, Iowa, who will be spending most of the summer with Mrs. O.M. Thomas and Mrs. Donald Connerly, Florida, are visiting friends in Gary and Valparaiso. Mrs. Agnus Miller spent Sunday with Mrs. Ivy Roberts, Clearmont.

Mr. and Mrs. Gale O’Hair, and family attended the IBM picnic at Lake Shafer, Saturday. David Stevens and family, New Jersey, spent the day last Friday with Mr. Steven’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Stevens. Miss Judy Stevens spent the weekend in St. Louis, a guest of Lloyd Stevens and parents. Kathy Crawley, Oklahoma, is visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Alexander. Weekend guests of Floyd Yochum and Mrs. Daisy Alexander were Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Romine and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Clodfelter, Saturday evening, and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Crodian, Indianapolis, Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Stevens, Bainbridge, were Sunday evening callers of Walter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Stevens. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Thompson and Mrs. Norma Champ and children were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Champ, Seymour. Norma and children remained in the Champ home for a week’s visit. Dennis W. Anderson, son of Mrs. Charles Holland, has left Carnodo, Calif., for overseas duty. Mrs. Elizabeth Clodfelter is spending a few days in the home of Mrs. Maxine Callender. Sunday callers of Maxine and Elizabeth were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Clodfelter and daughters, Brownsburg, and Janet Clodfelter, Donaldson, Tenn. Dinner guests last Monday of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert McGaughey were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Sutherlin, New Jersey, and Mrs. Hazel Sutherlin, Russellville. Jim McGaughey will spend this week at Boy Scout Camp with the Brick Chapel group. Noel Nicholson showed his cattle at the Martinsville, 111., Fair on Monday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson attended the Jersey Sale picnic at Lebanon, July 7. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Fonner visited his mother, Mrs. Alice Fonner, Franklin, one day last week. Last Thursday they visited Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Zimmerman, Indianapolis. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Barker and Dick Barker attended the Bainbridge Saddle Club horse show last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Barker’s granddaughter, Rita Kay Jefferies, six years old, won first and second in her age group. Mrs. Ethel Lawter is a house guest of Mr. and Mrs. Noel Nicholson.

House guests last Monday and Tuesday of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Martin were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ice Cream Social is big success The 14th annual Madison Township Ice Cream Social was deemed a success, with the “largest crowd ever,” according to officials. It is estimated that more than 1,000 persons attended the event Saturday night. Some 81 gallons of ice cream were sold. The proceeds from the Ice Cream Social this year will be used to help form a volunteer fire department. Three grand prizes were awarded. The winners were Felix Knauer, a portable television set; David Christian, Indianapolis, a picnic table; and John Klebusch, a barbeque grill. Prizes were donated by 35 area merchants. Jim Shelton of WIBC radio, Indianapolis, was also featured. Officials of the Ice Cream Social expressed their appreciation to everyone who contributed to the affair for its success.

Putnam County 4-H girls brought honors to the county at the District 4-H Judging Event held in Vermillion County. Five of the 14 seniors (high school) participating won the privilege of judging in the State Fair Contest. They are Study Desk Units, 1st, Donna Kay Fordice, Russellville, and 5th, Sally Sendmeyer, Greencastle; Let’s Have A Party, 3rd, Patty McGaughey, Russellville, and 5th, Vicki Wallace, Bainbridge; Selection Of School Wear, 5th, Nancy McGaughey, Russellville. Carolyn T o r r , Greencastle, was first Alternate in the Study Desk Units. Approximately 30 girls participated in each group.

Putnam County juniors (under high school age) had more placings in the first five than any other county attending. They were as follows: Study Desk Units, 1st, Toni Johnson, Roachdale, 3rd, Judy Rowings, Madison Township, and 4th, Rebecca Aker, Greencastle; Let’s Have A Party, 4th, Laura Myers, Roachdale; Selection Of School Wear, 2nd, Ann Erpelding, Greencastle, 4th, Nina A d e r, Bainbridge, and 5th, Jeri Summers, Bainbridge. Juniors do not judge at State Fair. Leaders attending from Putnam County were Mrs. Bernice Steward, Mrs. Dotti Buechler, and Betty H. Sendmeyer, Area Extension Agent, Home Economics.
