in our backyard during the summer and needed a way of keeping drinks, melons and other items cold. So I bought a new 20-gallon garbage can and use it as a cold drink refrigerator. We put a block of ice in it, chop some of it up and then pack the cans all around. This keeps everything cold and saves running in the house. Horticultural Tips

The long hot summer seems to have arrived and therefore proper watering becomes an even more important phase of lawn management. Improper watering causes more damage to the lawn than the lack of water. Sprinkling is not the same as watering. Watering thoroughly (supplying one inch of water) once a week, is con-

sidered the proper method of lawn watering. Lawns should be watered when the soil begins to dry out, but before grass wilts and turns brown. The first symptom of a lawn under moisture stress occurs when the grass turns a dark bluish green or becomes smokey in appearance. Applying the water is only half the job. The water must penetrate the soil and penetration is slow on heavy, clay soil. Therefore a fine spray applied slowly allows penetration without runoff. Consider the natural rainfall too. The lack of rain should be

supplemented with enough irrigation to equal at least one inch of water per week. One inch of water per 1,000 feet is C20 gallons. One inch of water will penetrate 4’-C” deep in clay soil.

receive pension ROME (UPI)—An Italian court has ruled the widow of Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini is entitted to a monthly pension because her husband was a government employe, it was disclosed Monday. The amount of the pension wau not announced. But in-

formed sources said Mrs. Rachelc* Mussolini, 77, will receive an arrears payment of $48,000 and $!iG0 per month. The ruling by the ' ourt of appeals ended a years-long battle waged by Mrs. Mussolini, whose husband was captured by Italian partisans in April 1040, machinegunned to death and later hung by Ids heels in a .ilan square. The court held she was entitled to a government pension as the widow ofa civil servant—in this case, premier of Ita y—who served the state more than 20 years.
