Letter from
London
By Lawrence Taylor
There is an old saying in Eng. land that if you could stand in Piccadilly Circus long enough you would see the whole world pass by. I have no way to prove or disprove that after only one month but I suspect there is a grain of truth in it. Since I arrived on June 18 the smallness of our world has been revealed to me. Two weeks ago I began a series of encounters with familiar faces when I phoned a life-long friend Candy Balay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Balay of Gardenside Drive. Candy is now the wife of an Air Force man stationed at the High Wycombe base just outside of London. She is also the mother of six-month old Jeff. Candy and family plan to return to Greencastle in December after almost two years away from home. I also had the pleasure of joining Mr. and Mrs. Glendon Rightsell and daughter, Mary, for tea and dinner last week and later for a party which I will describe in a moment. The Rightsells are leaving tomorrow qp the Dutch ship, Rotterdam, after over a month of living in London and touring Ireland. Another note I might mention illustrating our small world is that the hotel they stayed in while in London was owned by a man named Ethel Zeiner completes training FT. GORDON, GA.-WAC Private Ethel M. Zeiner, age 21, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert L. Zeiner, Fillmore Route 1, has completed a 12-week communications center specialist course at the Army Southeastern Signal School, Ft. Gordon, Ga. She was trained to operate teletype sets and other communications equipment.
Michael Marshall who is a cousin of Mrs. Fred Bergmann of Arlington Street. The party I referred to earlier was held in a quaint old English Pub named the Carpenters Arms and located across the Thames River in the south part of London. There last Friday night we attended a get-together with Mr. and Mrs. George Long who are on their annual trip to England’s capital. (Mrs. Long’s parents own the pub). Also there representing the financial interests of Greencastle were Mr. and Mrs. Ward Mayhall of Paradise Lane. They will be touring Ireland in the next two weeks before flying home. I received a phone call from a former Greencastle resident Reverend Elmer I. Carriker who was to be joined by his wife while chaperoning a group of students from Baker University. My roommate from Gary, Indiana, ran into another Greencastle resident who he identified as Professor John Eigenbrodt of DePauw’s department of philosophy and religion. Also I have heard through the grapevine from home that the following people have or will walk through Piccadilly Circus; Miss Martha Whitaker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Whitaker and also Coach and Mrs. Elmer McCall and I won’t begin to list all the DePauw students who are touring Europe and England this summer. So you can see it is possible that Piccadilly Circus in the heart of London sees a good part of the world pass by. And Greencastle and Putnam County are surely well represented among the world travelers. I turn to a crucial topic in next weeks letter; — reaction in Great Britain to the war in Viet Nam. Until then greetings from your friends in London. Sincerely, Larry

Dear Editor: Since it is quite obvious that our official Viet Nam policy is not victory “in the classical military sense” (General Westmoreland), but merely a political game in which valuable American men are the pawns, just what is the price of “peace” in Viet Nam? Our chief negotiator in Paris, W. Averell Harriman, has again told the North Vietnamese that they will be the recipients of “billions’ of dollars of U.S. aid if they will just be nice to Uncle Santa Claus. Is this the reason for the wanton sacrifice of thousands of GI’s? Our men are being used as political footballs; are we going to allow these fine young men to be hopelessly bogged down by treason in high places, or are we willing to pay the price of standing for God and country in active support of our servicemen? Anyone willing to thus support our men in uniform should begin by reaffirming their personal faith in Christ, our Peace, then become informed by attending the Tom Hollingsworth rally,
