cobs and son, Scott, spent a month with her this spring. The entire community extends sympathy to Dr. Jacobs in his loss. Roy Cook, who lives southeast of town, entered the Putnam County Hospital Saturday evening when he became very ill at his home. He was given oxygen on arrival and will have tests to find the cause of his illness.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Waskom and daughters have returned home from a trip to Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains. William Hoke, living on Walnut St., was taken to the Putnam County Hospital, Saturday, in the Weaver ambulance. He was injured while mowing the highway. A bridal shower for Miss Penny Wingler will be held in the social rooms of the United Methodist Church, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Herschel Cline entered the Putnam County Hospital last Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. George Thompson and daughters returned home last Monday from Damascus, Va., where they visited his parents,Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thompson. His father underwent surgery later in the week and they were called back Saturday to Virginia when his father became critical. Miss Connie Cooprider spent Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. Effie Morarity.

By ME RRIMAN SMITH UPI White House Reporter WASHINGTON (UPI) -Backstairs at the White House: Violence this year which took the lives of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy has led some students of the presidency to lave new fears for the safety of chief executives." Such fears certainly are not confined to academic theorists, but shared for more practical reasons by men with responsibility in this depressing specialty, experts of the U.S. Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Definitive Solution And the more presidential safety is studied, the more a truly definitive solution seems to lie with the chief executive, himself. Professional security experts say this is a matter to which the new president must address himself and preferably, ever before he gets to the White House. An interesting mathematical projection was published recently by a physicist and one-time operations research specialist for the U.S. Navy, Dr. Thomas E. Phipps, Jr. In a special article for the Washington Post, Dr. Phipps used a series of analytical formulas based largely on past history and population growth to show “by the present calculations, the number of presidential assassinations will by the year 2014 reach one on the average of every four years.’’ Makes Point While the president who takes office next January would not have to be concerned personally with Dr. Phipps’ calculations for 2014, the physicist did make a point that appeared to stand firmly independent of his far. out calculations. The point was this: Assuming that morality remains about what it has been on the average since the founding of this country, security of future chief executives will depend in large measure on whether they “wake up quickly to their personal danger.” Without being physicists, ex. perts in Calculus or professors, agents of the Secret Service have known for years that the final test of any presidential security arrangement always comes down to the chief executive and the extent to which he accepts the dismal facts of danger. After the most recent Kennedy shooting, President Johnson assigned extensive federal protection to all presidential candidates. MARION, Ind. (UPI)—Marion City Police voted Monday night to go on strike to get fringe benefits and $100 per month salary Increase per man, but Mayor Gene Moore and city attorney Lloyd Cochran immediately obtained a restraining order preventing them from picketing or failing to perform their duties or threatening to do so. The policemen had been on strike less than one hour before the injunction was handed down from Grant County Circuit Court. The 59 policemen affected by the strike met for two hours in City Hall Monday night with their attorney, Steve Johnson, before deciding to strike. They said Police Chief Ted Mull, his a s s i s t a n t, Wilbur Evans, and three other policemen, including a radio operator and two patrolmen for emergency duty, will be allowed to cross the picket line. Johnson said, “in arriving at this decision, the membership was mindful of the meaning of this action to the general public — However, it felt that it would take some sense of shock and realization for Marion residents to realize the police were underpaid and to solicit public support.” The wage for a patrolman is now $5,959.92 per year. The city council offered a five per cent increase at a meeting last Tuesday, but it was rejected. The city council finance committee acknowledged Monday afternoon that the policemen are underpaid and offered to negotiate with the Martin Boots Lodge 79 of the Fraternal Order of Police for the fiscal year 1970, but that was also rejected. Marion firemen are also demanding the same $100 per month increase but no negotiations have begun yet. 1
