By SUSAN GOLDENBERG INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — The wife of the Indiana Republican gubernatorial nominee, Secretary of State Edgar Whitcomb, would rather be seen than heard. But there probably will be few objections about this during the coming months of the campaign because Mrs. Patricia Whitcomb is a brunette with green eyes and still has the trim figure she had 17 years ago when she was a model. Mrs. Whitcomb has made only one speech— to Hoosier Girls State—since her husband was nominated at the GOP state convention and as far as she is concerned it’s her last. She says she would rather chat wit! people in the audience after hei husband has finished speaking so that she can meet people hei husband won’t and thus make potential supporters feel they know both of them. Thanks Note Writer But while she is reluctant to make speeches, Mrs. Whitcomb plays an active part in her husband’s campaign. She makes it a point to write thank-you notes to their hosts in the towns they visit and to answer all congratulatory letters on her husband’s nomination. Mrs. Whitcomb also takes a phenomenal memory for names along on the campaign trail and laughingly remarked that it’s **o n e reason Ed takes me along.” The Whitcombs have been on the go ever since the convention. “During the pre - convention campaign we covered nearly all the 92 counties and met our Republican acquaintances,” Mrs. Whitcomb said. “But this time we want to meet everybody.” To do this the Whitcombs are gone for home four or five days a week and “have learned to live out of a suitcase.” They also maintain an apartment in Indianapolis where they keep a supply of clothes and where they go to relax during the campaign. Phone Kids Often But no matter how hectic the pace gets, the Whitcombs phone their five children two or three times a day. “I believe it’s important to have close family ties in this day and age,” Mrs. Whitcomb says. All of the children—Tricia, 15, Ann, 14, Sherry, 10, Alice, 8, and Johnny, 7—are on swim

teams and the family makes it a point to go swimming a lot together. The Whitcombs have been married for 17 years. They were wed four months after they met at an Indianapolis department store where Mrs. Whitcomb was modeling. “Ed was having lunch with a group of legislators in the tea room and the hostess told us to stop by their table because they wanted to see the models,” she recalls. Rest Each Day Mrs. Whitcomb says she and her husband find energy for the constant round of campaigning by having a “sense of humor” and taking a 10 or 15 minute rest during the day to relax and freshen up. Mrs. Whitcomb also does much of the driving for her husband and he has paid her the ultimate compliment of saying she drives better than some of the men he knows. Mrs. Whitcomb also says her enjoyment of meeting people helps make the pace of the campaigning more bearable. But the steady road tour has had its toll on her. After the convention she almost lost her voice and still is a bit hoarse — just from chatting. Modem variation NAPLES, Italy (UPI)—Competitors in the Naples Song Festival have sung ballads for years about broken hearts, aching hearts and lonely hearts. Tenor Aurelio Fierro came up with a new angle Thursday night. His entry was entitled: “The transplant.” Heated competition BROWNSVILLE, Tex. (UPI) — Champions of South of the Border type cookery today were making preparations to defend their tonsil-searing specialties against the Menu Magic of Chili Appreciation Society, International in a cookoff refereed by the Department of Health. The judging charts for the culinary competition which gets under way next week include the questions: — Did it smell spoiled? — Did it move around much? — Did it attempt to communicate with you in any way? — Did it restrict your kneejerk reaction?
