(UPI) - The weekly crop report of Purdue Agricultural statistician Robert Straszheim said Monday that topsoil and subsoil moisture supplies dropped to a “short” rating in central areas of the state last week. “Both topsoil and subsoil moisture supplies further declined to a rating of short to mostly adequate,” the report said. “The previous week's rating was adequate. Deficiencies prominent the previous week in the southern part of the state spread to the central areas.” But the light scattered showers during the week only briefly limited field activities. Wheat harvest caught up with last year’s progress and was almost equal to average. “By the end of the week, wheat was 50 per cent harvested compared to 55 per cent for average. Combining was near completion in the southwest. By areas, 65 per cent was combined in the south, 60 per cent in the central, and 25 per cent in the north,” the report said. Straszheim reported that oats harvesting remained slightly behind last year and fell farther behind average.
