Tell Earl the American League race is over
Earl Weaver apparentls hasn’t heard yet that .the American League race is supposed to be all over. Weaver, a little-known organization man who vaulted into the spotlight suddenly last week when the Baltimore Orioles named him' to . replace Hank Bauer at the All-Star break, suddenly has the Orioles charging at the front-running Detroit Tigers. The Orioles whipped New York 8-2 Monday night to boost their record to 6-0 under Weaver. Meanwhile, the Tigers’ record slipped to 1-4 since the All-Star break when they suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the California Angels. The result is that the Orioles, who were in third place IOV2 games back when Weaver took over, are now in second place 6i/ 2 games behind. And the Orioles, who’ve played four less games than the Tigers, are just five games back in the loss column. The Orioles get their key chance to‘ tighten the race this weekend when they invade Detroit for a four-game series. Athletics Swamp Bosox Elswhere in the American League Monday night, Oakland topped Boston 12-5, Cleveland edged Minnesota 4-2 and Chicago nipped Washington 3-2. In the National League, Philadelphia topped New York 5-3, Atlanta edged San Francis- ^ co 4-2, St. Louis beat Los Angeles 4-2, Chicago nipped Pittsburgh 2-1 in 10 innings and the Houston-Cincinnati game was rained out. Frank Robinson led the Orioles to their victory over the Yankees as he tripled in Don Buford in the first inning for the first Oriole run and then scored on a daring piece of base running when Boog Powell was thrown out trying to bunt. When losing pitcher Fritz Peterson thew to first, Robinson broke for the- plate and scored when Mickey Mantle’s throw to the plate was high and wide. who went the first six innings but two of them were two-run homers. Jim Fregosi brought in Vic Davalillo on his round, tripper and Aurelio Rodriguez’ scored Chuck ‘ Hinton with a home run in the fourth inning. George Brunet pitched a fivehitter to take the victory with three of the hits collected by
Kaline. Brunet is 9-6.
Jim Lonborg’s shaky pitching again hampered Boston in its effort to move back into the race. The Red Sox are 9V2
games out. Lonborg entered the game with the score tied 3-3 in the sixth. He threw only 11 pitches as he walked the first two Oakland batters he faced and the third was safe on an error. Two of the runners scored off reliever Bill Landis. The A’s then added four runs off Lee Stange and three off Darrell Brandon. Lonborg, 0-3,
took the loss.
The White Sox boosted their record to 3-0 under A1 Lopez by edging the Senators.
By DICK DEW UPI Sports Writer BOSTON (UPI)—Bill Crowley can discuss baseball attendance in Madison Avenue terms. And, as a former college economics teacher, he uses the Boston Red Sox to illustrate his lecture. Crowley is public relations director of the Red Sox. This means, in part, that he helps get paying customers into Fenway Park. It was a struggle for years but it’s been another kind of struggle since Boston shocked the baseball business by winning a pennant last season'. In the process, the Red Sox set an all-time club attendance mark and led the American League to a record level. And, while the 1968 pennant race will be the determining factor, the Sox have a shot at remaking their own mark this season. “It’s been a case of seeing the things we did down through the years paying off now. We concentrated on keeping interest alive by promoting baseball through the years when we were hard pressed. The product (a winner) developed last year,” Crowley said. Conservative Approach “There was a conservative approach here when we started and we tried to institute our promotions without the gimmicks, the fashion shows, rock and roll nights, the giveaways that so many clubs have used. “We felt-.that if the promotions weren't baseball, we’d be taking something away from the original product. And I think that where our attendance is holding up, some of the other cities, who didn’t concentrate on strictly baseball, are falling off.” Crowley’s statistics are impressive. The Red Sox drew
over 1.7 million to the second smallest park in the majors last season, breaking the club record by over 200,000. The y’v e attracted 944,706 through the gates in the first 40 dates, despite consistently poor weather this season. With 36 dates and a huge advance sale remaining, they could even hit 2 million—though they’re not predicting anything like that. “We felt that if the promotions weren’t baseball, we’d be taking something away from the original product. With 36 dates and a huge advance sale remaining, they could even hit 2 million—though they’re not predieting anything like that. Much of it goes back to the policies worked out by General Manager Dick O’Connell, the American League executive of the year in 1967, and his public relations director some years ago. “We concentrated on the bat day, cap day, state days, Cape Cod day, and family night games and tried to stay away from the standard type promotions that so many other teams were using. We wanted to get the kids interested,” Crowley said. “Other clubs are concerned that they’re losing the teenagers but we believe we’ve reversed the trend here.

Follow trend WESTBURY, N.Y. (UPI)— The thing to do when you have an athletic team In the New York area is to move it East and name it with a four-letter word ending in “ets.” The Mets started the trend when they moved from the Polo Grounds in Manhattan and found a gold mine at Shea Stadium in Queens. The Titans followed the Mets out there, changed their name to Jets and started playing before sellout crowds. The latest team to follow the trend is the New Jersey Americans, a rather obscure team which played last year in the American Basketball Association to Teaneck, N.J., before a lot of empty seats in the Teaneck Armory. The Americans are moving to Long Island and will be called the New York Nets. The club will play in the Commack Arena until the multi-million-dollar 16,000 capacity Nassau County Coliseum is completed during the 1969-70 season.
Colavito a free agent
BALTIMORE (UPI)—R 0 c k y Colavito, one-time slugging idol of Cleveland’s bobby soxers, was signed as a free agent by the New York Yankees Monday and promptly volunteered to try to help the team as a pitcher. Always noted for his strong throwing arm, the 34-year.old Colavito pitched three innings of relief for the Indians in an American League game in 1958 and has pitched in several exhibition games for Cleveland. However, Yankee Manager
Ralph Houk ruled out the possibility of using Colavito as a pitcher and said that the reason he was picked, up was because the Yanks are short of outfielders. Houk added that he doesn’t expect to use Colavito as a pinch-hitter.
