Quiet woman terrorizes village
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (UPI)—A “very quiet” Indian woman wearing a flowing black sari and armed with a shotgun Monday night held a for ce of 20 policemen at bay from inside her house in the farm town of Ngaruawahia. There were fears for the safety of her husband and two children. A squad of police rushed to the home of Mrs. Prito Dass, 32, following a telephone call from a neighbor who saw her
walking around carrying a shotgun. Her husband, Parshotam Dass, and their two children, Shindo, 5, and Limla, 3, had not been seen since morning. Detective Inspector James McCarthy, in command of the police force surrounding Mrs. Dass’ house, told newsmen he would “let her make the first move.” McCarthy said his men would not charge the house but also
added he would send neither food nor ammunition in to Mrs. Dass. “We are not going to emulate the Australian case,” McCarthy said, referring to the seven-day siege by police of gunman Wally Mellish in Sydney, Australia. Mellish married a teen-aged girl he took as hostage one week ago and has been holed up in his house ever since, threatening to kill his bride and her 12-week-old baby.
Australian police have supplied Mellish both food and ammunition during the siege, a maneuver which drew loud criticism from^Sydney citizens and the press. A neighbor who described Mrs. Dass as “very quiet” said she came to her house to use her telephone early Monday morning. The neighbor, Mrs. J.C. Parrish, said Mrs. Dass muttered about her own house
being “black” and having a taboo on it. Mrs. Dass fired one shot in the general direction of police when they first arrived. She answered loudspeaker pleas from police to put down the gun by calling, “Put your guns down — I have a gun, too.” First Blood MORGANTOWN, Ky. <UPI» —The first blood shed in Kentucky during the Civil War was spilled two miles west of here in Butler County Granville Allen. of the 17th Kentucky Infantry, was killed Oct. 27, 1861, in a skirmish between the Blue and the Gray within a few miles of his home
I.U. Trustees begin search for president
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (UPI)— The Indiana University Board of Trustees soon will be off on another hunting expedition for a permanent successor to Dr. Elvis J. Stahr, who resigned as president Saturday citing “presidential fatigue” as the reason for his decision. Dr. Herman B Wells, president from 1937 to 1962 and since then the university’s first chancellor, will serve as acting pres-
ident beginning Sept. 1 when Stahr’s resignation becomes effective and he begins a one-year leave of absence before return, ing to the IU law school faculty. Wells, 66, who says six years ago at the time of his resignation it was time to turn over the helm to a younger man, accepted the temporary appoint, ment “with regret.” The fact he will take over
nearly two months hence on an acting basis indicated the trustees are in no hurry to appoint a successor to Stahr, who they obviously hoped at the time of his appointment and resignation as Army secretary in President John F. Kennedy’s cabinet would serve a tenure longer than six years. Stahr insisted there was no reason for his action other than that he was exhausted from 24 years of pressure in “demand, ing jobs” requiring “unusually long hours.” Speculation on major administrative problems and Stahr’s health were denied.
