Bomb raids intesify
By JACK WALSH SAIGON (UPI)— U.S. B52 Stratofortresses eight times blasted Communist guerrilla positions in the Saigon area today. The heavy raids followed the Viet Cong’s blowing up two bridges, one near Saigon and another near the vital U.S. supply base at Cam Ranh Bay. The B52s struck targets ranging from 26 to 57 miles from Saigon and Navy warplanes bombed a brick factory two miles west of Vinh. They reported red dust and smoke rose 2,000 feet. U.S. fighter bombers sank a 150-foot ferry 23 miles northwest of Dong Hoi. Viet Cong demolition teams used a floating mine to destroy the Ben Luc Bridge which links the Mekong River rice fields with Saigon. Far to the northeast, guerrillas also used a mine to blast out a 45-foot span over the Cail River on one of Vietnam’s few remaining rail lines. The Cail River span links Dalat with Phan Rang and Nha Trang, site of the headquarters of the U.S. Special Forces Green Berets. The brides is 10 miles from Cam Ranh Bay. The loss of the bridge halted the four trains that travel the
route daily, loaded mostly with produce goods. They estimated it would take a week to repair the span. The destruction of the bridge could cause a rise in the cost of vegetables since the rail

line was one of the few ways of getting Dalat’s produce to market. Because of frequent minings, most of Vietnam’s railway network is no longer used. In many areas, in fact, the Vietnamese have torn up the tracks to reinforce bunkers. Elements of the 3rd Brigade of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division took a heavy toll of Communists in fighting near Saigon Sunday. U.S. spokesmen said the airborne troops were supported by U.S. helicopter gunships. No American losses were reported. Defector defects By CHARLES E. TAYLOR MIAMI (UPI)— Eight years ago a Cuban cargo pilot landed in Miamia and decided to stay. Today, his plane will fly out of Havana but Fidel Castro’s police will be holding Capt. Jorge Antonio Prellezo on a charge of desertion. Prellezo had planned to. be in the Great Smoky Mountains today, vacationing with his wife and five children, but instead he is in a cuban jail, the victim of an ironic hijacking. Southeast Airlines, meanwhile, expected the airliner diverted by a gunman during an island-hopping run in the Florida Jeys Saturday to be back in Key West this afternoon, along with its 15 passengers and two other crewmen. A substitute pilot was being flown to Havana from Miami. Swiss diplomats in Havana reported the outlook was “bleak” for the release of Prellezo, a Cuban-born naturalized U.S. Citizen. It was in late June of 1960 that Prellezo, then employed for a Cuban cargo airline, landed in Miami and decided not to return to Castro’s island. So when his hijacked airliner touched down in Havana he was placed under arrest as a defector. Swiss diplomats had said they expected no trouble in the return of the 17 other Americans. But a Havana newspaper, El Mudo said Prezello would have to stand trial for his “defection.” When an unidentified gunman barged into the cockpit of the Southeast Airlines DC 3, the incident followed the pattern of four other airliner hijackings earlier this year and the second within 10 days.
Ship-shape island is Rome landmark
ROME <UPI>—This ancient city is home for so many ancient marvels, so why not one of the world's first man-made islands? The Isola Tiberina is the Tiber river’s only island in Rome and historians believe it was formed from silt that collected when ancient Etruscans dumped broken pots used for shipping grain.

One theory is that the Romans decided to build their city here in the 8th century B.C. because the island made it easier to bridge the river. Not much was done with the Isola Tiberina until the 3rd century B.C. when a great plague swept Rome, leaving thousands dead. The Romans prayed to the Greek god of medicine. Aesculapius, who was said to have reincarnated himself as a serpent which was found there as the plague abated in 291 B.C. The grateful Romans adopted him as their own god of medicine and built a temple to him on the island, which has been connected with the medical arts ever since. A pilgrims’ hospital was built there in the Middle Ages and now it is the home of the Fatebenefratelli < Brothers of Good Works) Hospital. In the 1st century B.C. the Romans built the Ponte Pabrizio from the east bank of the Tiber to the island. The oldest bridge in Rome, it is still standing, its durability attributed to the Roman method of supporting bridges with a full circle, only half of which is visible above the water as a supporting arch. They built the Ponte Cestio from the west bank using the same method, but it has been reconstructed and reinforced since ancient times. The Romans sculpted the island into the shape of a ship with a prow pointing north This was to honor Aesculapius and the ship that brought him to Rome. Sick persons were brought to his temple in hopes of seeing the god in their dreams and hearing him prescribe a cure. Today the island retains its ship-like shape and there is still a sculpture of a serpent on the wall that forms part of the prow. Besides the hospital, there is a church, a pharmacy, a mattress shop, a bar and a restaurant. There are also a few apartments ranging from run-down places to renovated apartments with expensive furnishings and high rents. Except for rush hours when cars rumble over the 2,000-year-old bridges, the island is quiet now' as it must have been in Roman times and the Middle Ages when the sick came to be cured—as they still do today.

Revolution costs revoltingly high
By GEORGE SIBERA PARIS (UPI)—When the newly elected French national assembly meets July 11 it must face a major immediate and unpleasant task—figuring out how to pay the staggering cost of the “1968 revolution.” The “revolution” started with a student takeover of much of Paris’ Left Bank Latin Quarter involving battles with police and widespread destruction which led to strikes that involved 10 million workers throughout the nation. Finance Minister Maurice Couve de Murville was expected to ask for immediate revision of the 1968 budget. It was needed to cope with the deficit arising from the sweeping wage in-
creases that were the price for a return to work by striking employes in state-run services. Officials said the wage increases of 10 to 20 per cent
granted to 1.8 million employes of the state administrative services would cost more than $1.4 billion annually. Similar wage increases given
Merchant fleet grows
BUENOS AIRES <UPI > — Brazil’s merchant fleet was the largest in Latin America in 1967 and also was growing the fastest. Figures issued by the Institutes de Estudios de la Marina Mercante Iberamericana, located in Buenos Aires, showed Argentina’s merchant fleet in second place in tonnage. The Institute’s report covered self-propelled vessels of
more than 1.000 tons registered weight. Total tonnage was 3.696.423—a 14 per cent increase over 1966. The average age per vessel dropped from 15.1 years in 1966 to 14.7 years in 1967. At year’s end there were 111 vessels totaling 928,960 tons contracted to be built or under construction—a 25.1 per cent growth compared with 17.4 per cent in r.)66.
the 649,000 employes in nationalized industries such as gas, electricity, railroad, coal mines and the Paris subways would cost another $600 million. The 1968 budget, first estimated at $2G billion, had already been expected to end up with a deficit of $1 billion even before the crisis in May. The massive wage increases will treble the expected deficit to $3 billion. The government has not yet decided how to cover such a deficit. An increase of taxes appears out of the question because it would further aggravate the tax burden of French enterprises whose profit margin is already one of Europe’s most narrow
