1. You have only two entries to dummy and the problem is whether to take a heart finesse, after winning the ace of spades, or a club finesse. It is true that South may have either king, and to that extent whichever finesse you choose has a 50% chance to win, but, so far as making the contract is concerned, you are much better off to attempt the heart finesse at trick two. If South has the king, your worries are over because you can continue with the ace and another club, planning to repeat the heart finesse later on. Of course, you may lose the heart

finesse and will then require South to have the singleton or doi’bleton king of clubs to avoid a trump loser, but even so, you are better off in the long run to prefer the heart finesse to the club finesse at trick two. The really decisive factor is that the early club finesse does not guarantee the contract even if it succeeds, since South may have four clubs to the king, while the heart finesse does make the contract if South has the king. The heart finesse is therefore the better percentage
play.
2. The entire problem is to avoid losing two club tricks. This cannot occur if the clubs are divided 3-2, so all efforts are concentrated on catering to the possibility of a 4-1 or 5-0 break. With proper play the contract cannot be defeated by any distribution. Cash the A-K of hearts and lead a low club, finessing the jack. If South wins with the king, he must return a club or yield a ruff and discard. Either way, you make the rest of the tricks. If the club finesse wins, a low club return from dummy assures the contract. If South shows out, play any club from your hand and North is endplayed. If South follows to the low club, you are likewise sure of making the contract.

The third meeting of the Busy Belles 4-H Club was called to order by the president Carolyn Hurst. The pledge to the American flag was led by Jo Ann Crosby and the 4-H pledge was led by Dena Duell. Jennifer Vaughn and Gwen Porter then led the club in some songs. The minutes were read and approved and then the roll call was read. Members answered the roll call by telling their vacation plans for the summer. Then the treasurer gave a report and the amount of money the club has. We were told that dues are $.10 per meeting or $1.00 for the whole year. For old business we discussed the signs and decided to order 30 for $30.00 as soon as possible. Fifteen of the 30 are to be for the boy’s club. Other old business included discussions of going to Lucia’s Fabric Shop April 22 or 23 from 4:00 to 5:30 for a tour. Mrs. Frye had new business to discuss which was about the County Demonstration to be held July 9. She urged us to think about entering it. County Judging also was discussed. Mrs. Frye told us that it was set up the same as it was last year with judging events in clothing, foods, and study units. We then scheduled the rest of our meetings in our club books and set up Demonstration dates. Cathy Frye then taught us the Health ^Safety Pledge and showed us the ** Safety Six Pack.” Installation of new officers was then performed and led by our expresident, Stephanie Vaughn. Gifts were then presented to the old officers by Mrs. Frye. The meeting was adjourned by President Carolyn Hurst and recreation and refreshments followed. from carcasses. Low lying, swampy pastures and high lime-; stone pastures seem to provide the most favorable circumstances for survival of the organism, Meyer explains. How the organism enters the body is not definitely known, but cattle may get the disease by ingestion of contaminated food, water or soil. The organism may also enter the animal’s body through injuries to its feet. Meyer says first indication of the presence of the disease may be the discovery of a dead animal. Other animals may sicken within a few days. Initially the animal may show lameness and reluctance to move, run a high fever and swell in the neck, loin and legs. Later these swellings become cold, painless and gaseous. The animal may die within 12 to 36 hours. Most cases are not found until it is too late for treatment. In very early cases, massive doses of antibiotics may be beneficial. Meyer points out that cattle may be immunized against the disease. Where blackleg has been a problem calves should be vaccinated at about one month of age and then revaccinated at weaning time. If an outbreak occurs among unvaccinated cattle, all animals should be vaccinated. All young cattle should be vaccinated an-
nually.
All blackleg carcasses should be completely burned or deeply buried in quicklime, Meyer emphasizes. This is to prevent additional contamination of the farm.

Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF : A DISTURBED LADY was describing to her analyst the •la horrible nightmares to which she was subject. “I dream regularly,” she moaned, “that I’m a demon, a ghoul, a monster, a vampire, or a zombie.” ‘‘That’s fabulous,” agreed the analyst, ‘‘but tell me: do you always dream in alphabetical order?” * * * Rising comedian Jeremy Vernon claims he once crossed the ocean aboard a German plane whose captain announced, “Achtung! We will now show you a film about the Allies landing on the continent in World War II—with a surprise ending. We are running the film backwards so it has a happy ending—with the Allies retreating into the ocean.” Impersonating an Israeli pilot, he splutters, ‘‘Did I ever lie to you, folks'? Welcome aboard Flight 498, marked down from 500. My mother, the stewardess, will pass down the aisle with some fine chicken soup, pickles, and the very latest sensations in costume jewelry.” * • * The warden of a nearby jail answered a phone call in the middle of the night, and after trying vainly to decipher the jargon coming through from the other end, interrupted testily, "You must have the wrong name, sir. There is no one here by that number."

Lafayette, Indiana - farmers can look with optimism to the supply of spring soil moisture, reports Purdue University extension agronomist Dan Wiersma adds. The fact Indiana normally does have recharged soil moisture conditions each spring contributes greatly to its agricultural stability. This is in contrast to conditions as one goes west. There the soil moisture is not always recharged, and farmers must make management decisions based on soil moisture prospects. Although Indiana soils re-
charge, all soils are not equal in their capacity to hold water, Wiersma points out. Capacity is based primarily on the texture and depth of the soil. A sandy soil will hold only two to three inches of water, whereas a silt loam will have from eight to ten inches. A week or ten days of no rain will cause the crops on the sandy soil to show signs of drought, while crops on silt loam can go three or four weeks. To overcome this difficulty on sandy soils, some farmers in Indiana have installed irrigation systems.
