HOPE TO RIDE IN DEkBY Among the nation’s outstanding jockeys who are expected to get Kentucky Derby mounts are these saddle stars. DePauw blasts Wabash for third time
For the twenty-third consecutive time DePauw blasted Wabash College’s tennis team Monday on the Blackstock Stadium courts. This time the count was 9-0. The Tiger string dates back to 1948 when Wabash and DePauw split a pair of dual matches. Since then DePauw has reeled off 23 consecutive victories. None of the Tigers had much difficulty in the one-sided contest. Dave Scanavine, number four singles man, was the only one really “pushed.” He won over John Greves 6-3, 6-1. The results: IS-Buzzie Pierce beat Beck Hannaford, 6-1, 6-2. 2S-Paul Mitchell beat Luther Godwin, 6-1, 6-0. 3S-Rob Morrison beat Geoff Mather, 6-0, 6-0. 4S-Dave Scanavino beat John Greves, 6-3, 6-1. 5S-Pete Thompson beat Tim Craig, 6-1, 6-1. 6S-Arnie Taylor beat Jerry Brunswick, 6-0, 6-1. Celtics are kings again
By JAMES F. COUR INGLEWOOD, Calif. (UPI)The world Isn’t changing after all—the Boston Celtics are kings of pro basketball again. “This has to be one of my greatest thrills,” bearded Play, er-coach Bill Russell admitted after his Celtics regained the National Basketball Association championship with a 124-109 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers Thursday night. It was the 10th time in 12 years the Celtics have won the NBA title—all since the 6-foot-9 defensive genius came to them fresh from leading University of San Francisco to two NCAA crowns. “That man Russell was the difference,” Coach Bill Van Breda Kolff of the Lakers declared. Perhaps, this was the Boston center’s greatest moment. The Celtics and their 34-year-old star were counted out before the season began after giving up the title a year ago to Philadelphia. Upset 76ers But the Celtics set the stage to show the so-called experts their domination wasn’t over by upsetting the 76ers in the Eastern Division playoffs. •< They took the Lakers, who were making their fifth bid for a championship since moving to Los Angeles from Minneapolis, in their best-of-seven game series four contests to two. “We had a great bunch of hustlers although this was not our most talented team,” Russell commented. “The Lakefs weren’t the most challenging team we had to face, but they had the most heart.” John Havlicek, the Celtics’ 6year pro from Ohio State, poured in 40 points and Bailey Nowell, the 9-year veteran who came to Boston last season, scored 30 before a forum crowd of 17,392. Early Lead Russell picked off 19 rebounds and collected 12 points. Twelve of his rebounds came In the first half as the Celtics virtually won the game by using a fast break with expert precision to jump into a 70-51 halftime lead. Larry Siegfried has 22 points for Boston. Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, the Lakers’ veteran stars, led their team with 28 and 22 points respectively, while 7-foot Mel Counts had a career high of 25 rebounds. The Celtics hit on 49 of 97 field goal attempts for a 506 shooting percentage but were out rebounded by the Lakers, 62-55. Los Angeles made 48 of 101 shots from the floor for m475.
A Little League meeting will be held Wednesday May 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Indiana Gas Company. The League is still needing umpires. Anyone interested is asked to call Max O’Hair, OL 3-4995. Rule book and rules pertaining to the Little League will be discussed at this meeting. DPU wins DePauw’s tennis team won its third meet in as many days Wednesday, knocking off Indiana State 8-1 in Terre Haute. Thursday the Tigers make up a postponed match with Ball State and then host Evansville Saturday. Indiana State, which figures to pose the greatest threat to DePauw’s ICC domination, pushed the Tigers in four matches before losing and came up with a victory in a fifth. Probably DePauw’s sweetest victory was Buzzie Pierce’s narrow win in the number one singles. Pierce knocked off the ICC’s defending singles champion Darrell Johnson, 6-0, 0-6, and 6-4,
By JACK WOLISTON NEW YORK (UPD — One of the biggest headaches plaguing pleasure boat manufacturers today is delivery of their products to the retail dealers or customers. It’s a difficult job to deliver a boat and it’s expensive. One industry source estimates that delivery charges for boats commonly range from 3 to 15 per cent. Some manufacturers say that various regional markets even within 500 miles of the factory are literally inaccessible because transportation costs by truck common carrier often are equal to the price of the boat. Some manufacturers delivering boats by truck-trailer from the New York area to Florida often must unload and take to the water en route or take circuitous routes to bypass, states where width restrictions are less than the beam of the boat.

Sports parade
:* £ x £ £
By JOE GERGEN UPI Sports Writer Rod Carew’s hit parade is stealing a march on the rest of the American League. Carew, the dandy second-year second baseman of the Minnesota Twins who was merely the league’s best rookie in 1967, hammered out three hits Thursday night in a 10-inning, 21 victory over the Detroit Tigers and boosted himself into first place among AL hitters. The slim native of Panama raised his average to .360 and increased his hit total to 27, tops among all AL players, as the Twins sliced the Tigers’ league lead to one-half game over the Baltimore Orioles. Tenth Inning Score Carew, who batted at or above .300 until Sept. 12 last season before dropping off to a highly respectable .292, doubled with two out in the 10th and scored the winning run on Tony Oliva’s single, advancing the Twins to within a game of the top. In the only other AL games played, the Baltimore Orioles whipped the New York Yankees 7-3 and the Boston Red Sox ended a four-game losing streak by beating the California Angels 4-1. Little State meet Saturday Taylor, Earlham and Wabash are among the favorites to capture the 63rd running of the Little State track meet Saturday at DePauw University. Over 300 athletes from 11 Hoosier schools are expected for the event that will begin at 1 p.m. in Blackstock stadium. Teams in the meet include Butler, DePauw, Evansville, Earlham, Franklin, Indiana Central, Marian, Oakland City, Taylor, Vincennes and Wabash. Defending champion Taylor will have two of the six defending champions who will be on hand for the meet. Bill Par man will be back to defend his crown in the intermediate hurdles and * Phil Captain will be running the two mile event again. Among the other defending champs back will be Earlham’s Bill Newcomb (discus and shot put), Vincennes’ Ed Henry (long jump), Butler’s Bill Jones in the 120 high hurdles, and Wabash’s versatile Phil Allen in the 100 and 220. Six Little State records are likely to fall. Captain already has eclipsed the standing marks of 4:18.3 and 9:19.3 in the mile and two mile. Allen has a 9.7 100, onetenth of a second better than the record. Both Butler’s Ken Mahike and Vincennes’ Dave Cutler have exceeded the 14-3 Little State pole vault mark. Each has a 14-6 leap to his credit. Mike Brown of Earlham has thrown the discus 156-7, more than a foot better than the record, and Vincennes’ Bob Churchwell has been just a few inches off the best Little State long and triple jump marks. Another record likely to fall is the mile relay mark of 3:21. Wabash already has a 3:20 the books. DePauw’s hopes in the meet hang on half miler Scott Shafer who two weeks ago captured the Tigers’ invitational meet in his speciality.
In the National League Houston defeated St. Louis 40, Chicago stopped Pittsburgh 10, New York blanked Philadelphia 3-0, Cincinnati topped San Francisco 6-2 in 11 iimings and Los Angeles score 2-1 over Atlanta In 17 innings. Dean Chance received credit for the Twins’ victory despite the fact he served up a gametying homer to Jim Northrup with one out in the ninth and was lifted for a pinch hitter in the 10th. Phoebus Gains Win Tom Phoebus extended his hitless string to 12 2-3 innings and settled for a six-hitter as the Orioles completed a threegame sweep of the Yankees. Phoebus walked four and struck out 11, including Mickey Mantle four straight times. Andy Etchebarren, Paul Blair and Mark Belanger each had three hits for Baltimore. Jose Santiago pitched a threehitter and posted his 11th successive victory over two seasons for the Red Sox. He ran his string of consecutive scoreless innings to 27 before the Angels scored in the fifth on a walk, sacrifice and Paul Schaal’s single. Santiago pitched shutouts in his previous two starts and now is 3-0. Ken Harrelson collected three of the seven Boston hits, including a solo homer in the sixth inning, and drove in two runs. :::::-:-:-x-:-x-:-:^x-:-: ; x ; >:-: ; :^x ; : ; x ; x ; : ; :;:;x':;: :
