Mrs. Yuncker presents interesting program
The Sir John Ogle Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century met with Mrs. Elmer Seller Tuesday afternoon with good attendance. After a delicious dessert, all responded to the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and the Ritual. Mrs. Seller, president, annouced the state meeting to be held Saturday in the downtown Holiday Inn in Indianapolis. Mrs. Russell Pierce, Mrs. Seller and Miss Carrie Pierce plan to attend. Mrs. Seller was elected as a delegate. Mrs. Pierce is auditor and Carrie Pierce is historian. This chapter meeting was to have been held in Bloomington at the home of Mrs. H.E.H. Greenleaf and Dr. Elizabeth Greenleaf, but Dr. Greenleaf entered the Bloomington hospital last Thursday for surgery and is progressing well at this time. For the program Mrs. Seller presented Mrs. T.G. Yuncker who talked on “The World’s Largest Steam Tow Boat, The Sprague,” which she saw at Vicksburg, Miss., now used as a museum while she was on a river cruise on the “Delta Queen” two years ago. The Sprague was named in honor of Captain Peter Sprague and served 46 years pushing barges of freight from Pittsburgh to New Orleans. In 1899, the Monongahela River
Consolidated Coal and Coke Company was formed. The contract for the boat went to the Iowa Iron Works at Dubuque. On December 5, 1901, the big 275 foot hull was launched on the ice covered Mississippi, the beginning of one of the longest and most colorful careers of any river boat. By the following June she was completed except for the stern wheel, the cost being $300,000. She was towed downstream to St. Louis where the stern wheel was attached. This could not be done before as the river channel was not wide or deep enough. In February 1907, she set the world’s all-time record for towing, a 60 unit tow containing 67,307 tons and covering 6 and one-half acres. It measured 1,125 by 312 feet and carried as much as 1,500 railroad cars. After this very interesting program, the meeting was adjourned until next September. Life Saving event A film and demonstration of artifical resuscitation is scheduled at the Cassell C. Tucker Post 58 American Legion Home at 7 p.m. Friday. According to Commander Ralph Richards, the General Telephone Company is providing a dummy, “Resusci-Annie,” for the demonstration of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

♦ A Q 10 7 ♦ A Q 9 8 2 The bidding: North East South West 1 ♦ Pass 2 ♦ Pass 2 ♦ Pass 4 NT Pass 5 ♦ Pass 6 NT Opening lead — four of diamonds. This gem was played by Alvin Roth in the national men’s pair championship. The slam is difficult to make even with the opponents’ cards exposed, but Roth managed the affair without this advantage and wound up with twelve tricks. He won the diamond lead in dummy with the jack and returned a low spade to his ten. When the finesse succeeded, Roth cashed the king of spades and three more diamond tricks, finishing in dummy with the
king.
East, in the meantime, had
been forced to discard three hearts, since he could not spare a spade or a club. Diagnosing the situation perfectly, Roth led a low heart from dummy at this point. He could have led the ace of spades instead to learn whether the suit was divided 3-3, but he was convinced they were divided 4-2. On the heart East was forced to play the queen, and the king lost to the ace. In the process, dummy’s jack became established as a trick. By this time the original situation had changed drastically. South had started the hand with only nine sure tricks, but, by guessing the spade finesse successfully and establishing a heart, he was now up to eleven tricks. The twelfth trick came soon after, because this had become the position: NORTH ♦ A J8 ¥J 4» K 5 WEST EAST ♦ 9752 +Q9 ♦ 63 ♦ J 10 7 4 SOUTH ♦ 6 ♦ A Q 9 8 2 West returned a club, won by the king. When dummy then cashed the jack of hearts, East’s position became untenable. He could not spare a spade; he could not spare a club. He was squeezed.
