Coatesville news
By Joe Davidson Carlos Clark, age 72, a well known farmer living on the New Maysville Road in Hendricks County was in town Monday. In the past six months he has under* gone major surgery and at pre* sent is slowly recuperating. Since the local Methodist minister, Reverend John Deal is in Dallas, Texas, two young men carried on the Sunday ser* vice April 28. Those acting were Donald Waggoner and Eddie Coop* rider. These young men have taken training and are fitting themselves to be tomorrow’s church leaders. They are to be congratulated for doing their work well. Word was received Tuesday that an Amo boy had been killed while on duty in Vietnam. The young man was Gilbert E.(Eddie) Buchanan, 19 years old and the son of Mrs. Anna Buchanan. He was killed by enemy fire not far from Saigon. He was a student in the Danville High School before entering the armed service in May. He left for Viet* nam last October. This young man is the second one from Clay Township to die in Southeast Asia. Mr. and Mrs. Otho Walters of Terre Haute were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. James Walters and family. A seven year old boy has re* cently gone out for baseball backed by several dads with young sdns. In his first practice this one hit a home run and in relating it said: “I’ll tell you it took that ball a long time to come down.” Tuesday was one of the wret* ched days of spring with a power* ful wind that whistled and moaned all day and into the night. An old saying tells it: “Never mind the weather, so the wind don't blow.” A number of local people attended the Cam mack auction at the Greencastle Armory Wed* nesday. An auction is a great place to see friends that one has not met in a long while. Since pioneer days folks young and old have enjoyed attending auction sales. There was really a big crowd at the Cam mack sale and enough articles to sell to keep the auction going from 10 a.m. until late evening. Mr. and Mrs. Don Noble and family of Indianapolis and Mrs. Leona Wongler of Clayton were Sunday evening supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Wingler and family. The Cascade Junior High Band and Chorus was scheduled to give a concert in the Cascade gymnasium Wednesday evening May 1. ' As political campaigners call at your place and leave their cards, just lay them away and before long you will find them handy for jotting down grocery lists or a meeting with its date that might be important to you. Miss Bobbe Runnells who has a position with the Bell Telephone in Indianapolis reports that business really picks up as she and others meet picket lines as they go in to work. One day, someone threw a stink bomb and the fumes almost drove them out. The local library is putting two new books on the shelves that merit reading. One is written by Harry Golden and entitled" A Little Girl Is Dead.” The story starts in the year 1913 in the city of Atlanta, Georgia, when the politician Tom Watson tried to make all white people hate Jews, Negroes, and Catholics. Leo Frank, a Jew, managed a pencil factory in the city in the basement of the factory a 14* year-old girl named Mary Phagan was murdered. Leo Frank was accused, tried and had a hanging sentence commuted by the governor to life imprisonment. Frank was kidnaped by a gang from the prison farm and lynched. Harry Golden tells the story in such a dramatic way that the story once started is difficult to put aside until the last word is read. The other volume is 18 short stories of folks who lived in eastern Kentucky hills and written by Jesse Stuart. One could read his story “The Basket Dinner” and find it so amusing that he would read it over again for a heartier laugh. One should meet Murt and Sweet William. This is a classic in the way of a humorous tale. Cascade High had a busy week in track and baseball. In a threeway track meet in which Cloverdale, Brownsburg, and Cascade took part, the Brownsburg Bulldogs ran away with 90 points to 33 for Cascade and 15 for Cloverdale. In a meet between Danville and Cascade, the county seat squad scored 56 points to Cascade’s 42. In a baseball game with Clover, dale, the Clovers won 7 to 5. Bob Coffey for his first year as a high school pitcher has been doing a creditable job for the Cadets. He has lost only to Cloverdale. A stork shower was given for Mrs. Joanna Cook Friday evening l> *
at the home of Mrs. Ruby Neier with Mrs. Lorena Mali coat as co-hostess. About twenty-five guests were present. Mr. and Mrs. Rex Hathaway of Indianapolis were Sunday after-
noon visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Hathaway, Mrs. Doris Runnells and Bobbi and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cook. There was a time when we could pick up a city daily and
read some clever editorials, good sport news, fashions and many things enjoyable that are missing today. We read of mobs here and abroad, riots in universities at home and in Europe and South
America. A dozen states today are ready to fly at each other’s throats. The leaders of these discontented, rioting peopje should take time to read and ponder over the opening line of a prayer
written by Robert Louis Stevenson long ago: “Purgefrom out our hearts the silent grudge.” Deal HOLLYWOOD ( U P I ) — Jack Lemmon’s Jalem Productions has purchased “The Crime Against Marcella” for CBS Theatrical Films. Lemmon will not appear in the picture.
Safety Rule ST. LOUIS (UPI) — Raymond I. Harris, St. Louis county coroner, who has carried on a vigorous campaign to reduce automobile deaths, circulated 7-inch rulers to emphasize the safety program. The ruler says “make it a rule ... be extra safe.’” The extra inch on the ruler is colored red.
Dust Storms LUBBOCK, Tex. (UPI) — The Texas South Plains were subject to 93 hours and 45 minutes of blowing dust in 1967, according to the Lubbock Weather Bureau. The worst dust storm was in early January, when 80 mile-, per-hour winds toppled three i 10-story light standards at the 1 Texas Tech football stadium.
