Why fertilize lawns? LAFAYETTE - “Why fertilize the lawn? After all, isn’t this asking for more work?” Fertilizing wisely is the key to density and uniformity, foremost qualities of a good lawn, says W.H. Daniel, Purdue University turf specialist. In Indiana, some 50companies provide turf fertilizers, such as 12-4-8 and 25-5-10. The high nitrogen (first number) favors greenness and growth for replacement and renewal. The low phosphorus (second number) assures cell division and new plant parts. The medium potassium (third number) is regulated or
paced to match the nitrogen. Where irrigation is used or grass clippings are removed, be certain the potassium is ample. So, from selections available at your garden shop, greenhouse, grocery or elsewhere, chose the formula best suited to help produce week-by-week the greenness and growth you desire in your lawn. Premium turf fertilizers provide special slow release, nonburning, dust-free, non-caking, and easy spreading chemicals. Therefore, premiums which have a high cost nitrogen base, generally cost more. Whatever you buy, use it to produce a uniform rate of density. Needless clipping an excessive growth can be avoided just as well as hungry, weak turf.
