The District 4-H and FFA Judging contest will be held Saturday, April 27th, at Rockville. Putnam County will have teams participating in livestock, dairy, crops, and forestry. North Putnam will have two teams participating in the livestock contest; Jackson Jr. Farmers will have two teams in the forestry judging contest; and Deanne Alton will be participating as an individual in the District Forestry judging contest. The dairy and crop judging results have not been tabulated at the time of this writing. The livestock judging consist of ranking two classes each of sheep, beef, and swine. The class consist of four animals. The member ranks each class of animals and then give reasons why he placed the in this particular order. In ranking these there are several factors which he must consider—the conformation of the body, bone structure, Breed characteristics, and things such as this. The forestry judging consist of identifying tree leaves and seeds. In dairy judging is similar to the livestock contest except it is just on dairy animals.

Opening lead—nine of spades. They say that where there’s life there’s hope, and many a declarer has been known to apply this philosophy successfully to a seemingly impossible contract Consider this hand where a highly optimistic South became declarer at seven notrump. When dummy came down, South had good reason to regret his ambitious undertaking; the odds in favor of his making the contract were rather poor. But even though South had only ten tricks to start with and encountered no miraculous

stroke of fortune such as the J-10 of clubs falling on the A-K-Q, or finding the diamonds divided 3-3, he nevertheless wound up making the grand

slam!

He won the spade lead with the king and cashed the Q-K-A of diamonds, West discarding a club on the third round. Had the diamonds been divided 3-3, declarer’s chances would have increased substantially, but when West showed out, the situation became well nigh hopeless. South next cashed two rounds of spades, ending in dummy, and East, who could not afford to part with either a diamond or a club, was forced to discard a

heart.

When declarer then cashed the A-K-Q of clubs, discarding a heart and two diamonds from his hand, West likewise found himself in difficulties because he had to find a suitable discard on the last club. Since he could not afford to discard the jack of spades, which would make dummy’s last spade a trick, West was also forced to part with a heart. Declarer then led a heart from dummy, finessing the jack successfully, and won the last three tricks with the A-Q-6 of hearts to bring home the grand slam. As a direct result of this combination of events, South demonstrated that in bridge, as in everyday affairs, where there is life there is hope.
