Mental hospitals inadequate “If you think that Indiana’s mental hospitals are adequate, you should be in one.” That statement was made today by Mrs. Charles Rector Jr. president of the Mental Health Association in Putnam County. She went on to explain that “then you’d see for yourself how inadequate, how badly overcrowded, how understaffed they are.” Mrs. Russell Pierce, membership chairman for the Association, said,“Don’t think it’s not your problem. Mental illness could affect you or your family at any time.” Statistics here in Indiana prove that one out of every ten persons will at one time require professional treatment for a psychiatric illness. Mrs. Pierce said, “Indiana mental hospitals just can’t take care of all their patients. Nor should they try.” “We don’t need new large state hospitals...although they do need renovation and more staff. We do need a new plan for providing treatment. Mentally ill patients should be treated in their communities through Comprehensive Mental Health Services. The Mental Health Association is dedicated to help bring these services to the residents of Putnam County. The best way you can help is to join the Mental Health Association in Putnam County.” The Mental Health Association is financially supported by the Greencastle United Fund and during each May an effort is made to recruit members to assist with programs and activities for the mentally ill.
