Huge contract awarded

WASHINGTON (UPI) — Announcement was made today that a huge government contract has been awarded the Magnavox Co. of Fort Wayne, Ind., which could mean more than $200 million dollars worth of business for the industrial firm over a period of years. Sen. Birch E. Bayh and Rep. J. Edward Roush announced the basic contract is for $16,446,747 for the first-year funding of multi-year production contracts for airborne anti • submarine warfare systems for the Navy. Bayh and Roush said in a joint announcement that the tracts could result in more than $200 million worth of business

for Magnavox, "including options.” All the manufacturing will be done at the Fort Wayne plant. Robert H. Platt, president of Magnavox, was quoted by Bayh and Roush as saying the items to be made under the contract are systems for the Navy’s new ASW patrol aircraft.

TV stations deny reports

BRAMCOTE, England (UPI) — Peeky, a parrot owned by exseaman Ronald Duns tan died Monday, aged 99. The secret of his life life? "He didn’t talk,” said Dunstan.

INDIANAPOLIS (UPI)—Television stations denied today a widely circulated report that Sen. Robert F. Kennedy has bought up all the advertising prime time in Indiana between now and the May 7 Democratic presidential preference primary. Hugh K i b b e y, advertising manager for WFBM-TV here, said Kennedy, Gov. Roger D. Branigin, Sen. Eugene McCarthy and former Vice President Richard M. Nixon, the latter unopposed in the Republican primary, all have contracted for prime time. Kibbey said Kennedy has

purchased more than any of the others up to now— $13,000 worth compared with $8,500 for Branigin, $7,000 for McCarthy and $5,000 for Nixon. He said more time is available and the candidates probably will buy additional time later. Ray Bates of WLW-I said his station has sold time to three of the four presidential candidates. He said his station "did not and would not” sell all its prime time to one candidate because it operates under the "equal time” theory. "If one candidate came in and demanded equal time, we would have to kick somebody off to get it for them,” Bates said.

Three resigning staff positions ELWOOD, Ind. (UPI)—Thirtyday notices of their intention to resign because of what they termed political pressure and threats have been given by three members of the staff of an organization to help migrant farm workers. Warren Waymire, project director; Leonard Zimson, construction supervisor, and Julia Barrett, office manager, said they would quit their jobs with the Indiana Self-Help Housing Office here. They said politicians tried to “compel us to vote contrary to our personal desires” and that

phone calls and personal threats were made "because of our efforts in helping the migrant workers.” The office, said to be the only one of its kind in Indiana, was established with funds from the Associated Migrant Opportunities Services. The program is designed to help low income farm workers build their own homes. The three who said they would quit the organization added they plan to continue working with migrant farm workers as volunteers.

Economic outlook improves INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) - The economic outlook in Indiana improved in March, according to W. H. Parks, director of the Indiana Employment Security Division. He said only 17,425 persons filed initial claims for unemployment insurance and there were no significant layoffs during the month. That is a sharp decrease from the 22,359 filed in March last year, and consider, ably lower than the 31,580 filed in February. Besides that, Parks said there

is a surplus of jobs in the state. Employers listed 13,429 nonfarm job openings in March, 3,600 more than in February. Only 20,099 persons filed new job applications in March, compared with 22,186 in February. A total of 8,571 jobs were filled with applicants referred by the Indiana State Employment Service, an increase of 1,450 over February. Parks noted that many of the job-seekers who contact the state employment service have the training, experience, or skills in demand to be employed immediately, but that others need training before they can be placed. In March, more than 300 persons were enrolled in training of one kind or another by the employment service.
