American bombers fly record missions
By JACK WALSH SAIGON (UPI) - American bombers flew a record 143 missions against North Vietnam’s southern panhandle Sunday, U.S. spokesmen said today. It also was the heaviest raid against North Vietnam since President Johnson ordered li. mited bombing to aid the coming of peace talks with Hanoi. The Easter Sunday raids destroyed or damaged scores of targets, including 16 supply route bridges, in the panhandle through which North Vietnam feeds and arms Communist forces in South Vietnam. U.S. spokesmen said never before had so many air raid missions struck the panhandle in one day. The big raid came as U.S. Marines, for the second time in a year, stormed and seized Hill 881 north. They killed 106 Communists who had used the peak to bombard the Leatherneck fort of Khe Sanh just under the North Vietnam border. The Leathernecks suffered six men killed and 12 wounded in the day-long Easer fighting on the heavily jungled slope. Marines seized the hillnamed for its meter height above sea level—in heavy fighting last May. Then they
abandoned it. North Vietnamese troops moved back and set up artillery positions which pounded Khe Sanh in the 11-week Communist siege that was broken two weeks ago. In the panhandle raiding, U.S. Navy A6 Intruder and F4 Phantom jets joined Air Force F111A swingwing fighter-bom-bers in striking supply targets along the coast. The swift FlllAs had been grounded nine days ago when of the six sent into war action for testing, one was shot down striking North Vietnam and another crashed in Thailand where they are based. Other jets Sunday struck the North Vietnam supply roads running into the Mu Gia pass, gateway to the Ho Chi Minh trail to the south. In the Saigon area, heavy fighting erupted late Sunday and early today near the Tan Son Nhut air and war base in the western suburbs and near the allied military complex at Bien Hoa, 15 miles northeast. In both cases government troops rebuffed Communist attempts to break through base defense lines. U.S. B52 Stratofortresses twice today raided Communist troop concentration areas about 50 miles northwest of Saigon, in the War Zone C area near the Cambodian border.

Branigin in St. Louis
WASHINGTON (UPI)— Four months before the Democratic National Convention, party leaders and power brokers are cautiously choosing up sides in what Is shaping up as a threeway race for the presidential nominatin. Two of the candidates, Senators Eugene J. McCarthy and Robert F. Kennedy, are .announced and running hard; unannounced but active is Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, who is expected to declare publicly after he returns from a Florida vacation next week. So far the list of endorsements looks like this: Humphrey can boast of endorsement by the highest, ranking Democrat who has gone
on record, former President Harry S Truman. From the 24 Democratic gov errors, Kennedy gets the edge with Llie backing of two: Kenneth M. Curtis of Maine and Philip H. Hoff of Vermont. Humphrey has the open endorsement of one, William L. Guy of North Dakota, plus the tacic backing of another John J. McKeithen of Louisiana. MeCarthy has yet to break into the gubernatorial ranks. Among senators, it’s just about a dead heat between Humphrey and Kennedy, with the latter getting the edge only because of the support he gets from his brother, Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts. Two senators, Walter F.
Mondale of Minnesota and Fred R. Harris of Oklahoma, have announced for Humphrey; two others, Joseph D. Tydings of Maryland and Stephen M. Young of Ohio have given their blessings to Kennedy. Young favors a Kennedy. McCarthy ticket, in that order. Let’s All Go To The Lobby of the friendly First-Citizens for all our banking needs.

By HORTENSE MYERS INDIANAPOLIS (UPI)— Governor Branigin went to St.Louis, Mo., today to confer with other Democratic governors about the next president while one of the two announced candidates was in the Hoosier state and the other was headed that way. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy returned to Indiana for his fourth trip today since announcing his candidacy for the White House. He is scheduled to arrive at South Bend shortly before noon and to also visit Michigan City and Gary before leaving the state this evening. The campaign plans of Sen. Eugene McCarthy, whose presldential hopes may sink or swim depending on the May 7 Indiana primary, were to be announced here today at a news conference. But it was the meeting of Democratic governors in St. Louis with Branigin attending
attending that intrigues many Hoosier political observers more than the actual campaign under their noses. Branigin is a favorite son candidate opposing both Kennedy and McCarthy. So far, Gov. Philip H. Hoff of Vermont is just about the only governor who forthrightly has joined the Kennedy camp, although New Jersey governor Richard Hughes has shown leaning the Kennedy way. Branigin, whose dislike for airplanes is well-known, is behaving like a candidate and will fly back to Indiana to fulfill a speaking commitment tonight at Fowler. As one Hoosier political leader put it, “this meeting of the governors in itself indicates they are not satisfied with the announced candidates.” The governors will probably not emerge from their closed door session and announce any

The legend that late playwright Russel Crouse made his only on-stage appearance in a one-minute, noline walk-on In "Life With Father,” is shattered by Hy Kraft, who is laboring on a book to be called "On My Way to the Theatre.’’ Kraft reminds us correctly that the well-loved Mr. Crouse actually spoke lines in a reasonably successful newspaper play by Ward Morehouse called "Gentlemen of the Press.” Brooks Atkinson wrote that his performance w'as "as muted as
Duse.” Another critic enthused that “Crouse broke all dramatic tradition by sitting with his back to the audience and then disappointing thousands of admirers by vanishing into a telephone booth." A third reviewer (later identified as Mr. Crouse’s wife) declared, "Russel Crouse gave the best back view of a city new’sman ever presented in a 10-line part and in a 5-minute big emotional scene eating a ham sandwich.”

majority choice for president, but the chances are good they will develop a strategy to follow in their individual states between now and August. One of the games being played in the 1968 Democratic presidential campaign might be called “pin on the button.” The object is to pin your button on as many leader-type people as possible. The problem is that when the leader-type being pinned is also a candidate for political office, he may suddenly turn neutral. For example, Lt. Gov. Robert Rock mentioned last week as being in the Kennedy camp-
said today this was not true. Jack New, Rock’s campaign manager, said it is so untrue that a Rock staffer who wanted to work for Kennedy was told he could do so only if he first resigned. Rock is campaigning for nomination as governor at the Democratic convention in June, and he apparently prefers to remain neutral in the presidential battle. The neutrality problem may be difficult today in South Bend when both Rock and his challenger, Rep. Richard Bodine, and Kennedy are all scheduled to visit the Dyngus Festival.
