During this period, which included President Johnson’s withdrawal as a candidate, his de-escalation of the Vietnam war and the assassination of Martin Luther King—and the reaction to all these events—it has seemed somehow trivial to pay much attention to video entertainment. Reality is— in reality— what television is all about, and when it sweeps across the home screen, enabling the viewer to feel in the groove of history-in. the-making, video fulfills its ultimate iurpose. Awards Program Affected Even Wednesday n i g h t’s Academy Awards ceremony on ABC-TV was swept up in the reaction to the King murder, which affected the tone of Hollywood’s annual prizegiving. Until these past few weeks, surely the most sustained and dramatic television coverage was the involvement with the act and aftermath of President Kennedy’s assassination. This period was certainly the one that affected television cover, age the most, and the four days seemed an eternity. But for the constant teleview-
er, the unceasing unwinding of events over the past few weeks has been an exhausting experience. And yet, like all such experiences, it becomes an unforgettable part of one’s life. What was most fascinating was to watch the forces of inevitability finally come to a head in the nation. After such pressures on the President over Vietnam, something was bound to give. And after such pressures on the country over the civil rights movement, something terrible was bound to happen. More In-Depth During these months of building tension, the thing one missed most on television was the weekly, network, prime time series of in-depth, timely reporting that we used to have. Surely, until recently we had "ABC Scope” and its sole devotion to the subject of Vietnam—but this was in an odd prime time hour, and many stations simply didn’t run it when the network wanted it run. Ecuador is named for the Equator, which it straddles.
