Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF A MOTHER SUPERIOR asked a dear little girl if she .cjl said her prayers every night. “I guess not EVERY night,” confessed the little girl. ‘‘Some nights I don’t WANT anything!”

A big manufacturer of plaids and tartans in Edinburgh received word that his star salesman, after 40 years of conspicuous service, had expired suddenly in a Liverpool hotel. The manufacturer wired — collect—to the hotel manager. “Kindly return samples byfreight and search his pants for orders.” And another Scottish story concerns the day the late Harry Lauder, on one of his numerous “farewell” appearances at the Palace Theatre in New York, was braced for a contribution to a chantyfund. “Remember the slogan," urged the fair solicitor. “Give till it hurts.” “Lady,” Sir Harry assured her. “the verra idea hurts."

QUICKIES: Mr. Abernathy had just become the father of triplets when his minister stopped him to enthuse, “I hear the Lord has smiled upon you.” “Smiled?” echoed Mr. Abernathy bitterly. “He laughed out loud.”

Noisy welcome NAGOYA, Japan (UPI)-A noisy demonstration to promote the return of Okinawa to Japan erupted today as five visiting American governors arrived. More than 100 demonstrators tried to push their way into the Aichi Prefectural (government) office when the governors arrived. Loudspeakers mounted on a bus blared a message demanding that the United States return the island, lost in World War H. The U.S. delegation was headed by Gov. John A. Volpe of Massachusetts.

By PHIL NEWSOM UPI Foreign News Analyst Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos has pleaded not guilty to aggressive intent against the Malaysian state of Sabah. But the charge that the Philippines were in fact training a commando force to infiltrate the former British colony of North Borneo persists and seems likely to affect for a long time to come his hopes of emerging as a new spokesman for Southeast Asia. The charge and Marcos’ denial are results of a story bizarre enough to equal the best in cloak-and-dagger fiction. It began in mid-March when stories seeped out of the island

of Corregidor in Manila Bay, World War II site of a heroic American-Filipino stand against the Japanese, of a mutiny in a Special Forces group which ended in the execution of from five to 60 trainees. Leader of the group was Maj. Eduardo Martelino, who headed up the Philippine army's civil affairs office, and was himself a dashing and mysterious figure who preferred his Moslem name of Abdul Latif and who was reported to have purchased his young bride for $1,250 with a couple of machine guns thrown in. Bride From Simunul His bride came from the island of Simunul, some 40 miles off North Borneo. On the island, he began welding together his force of Moslem tribesmen and army officers.

Later, he transferred to Corregidor for months of further training under the most rigorous conditions, which finally led to mutiny. But this was not the climax of the affair. The fat really fell into the fire when a former trainee testified during Philippine congressional hearings that the real mission of the force was the infiltration of Sabah. Malaysia entered an angry protest and jailed some Filipino residents of Sabah on grounds they were infiltrators. The embarrassed Marcos denied the story and said the Special Forces were being trained for action against the Communist-led native Hukbalahaps. He disbanded all Special Forces units in the army and

Bridge is a partnership game, as everyone knows, but nowhere does the element of partnership assert its high importance more • learly than during defensive play. For example, take this hand where East-West must cooperate perfectly to defeat the contract. West leads the deuce of diamonds and East wins with the ace as South follows with the king. It is certainly not difficult for East to diagnose partner’s lead as a singleton, since West would not lead the deuce from any doubleton combination. So East returns a diamond for West to

ruff, but is careful to select the three as his return. This is in line with the suitdirection convention by which the return of a low card requests partner to lead back the lower-ranking suit (the choice here is between hearts and clubs». while the return of a high card (say. the nine) would direct partner to lead back the higher-ranking suit. Accordingly West, having full faith in partner, returns a low club at trick three. East wins with the king, plays back another diamond, and the outcome is that South goes down one. since he cannot avoid losing a trick to the queen of trumps. Although West’s underlead ot the ace of clubs may seem daring. he should make this play on the basis of East’s deliberate selection of his lowest diamond. Let’s suppose East had no values in either hearts or clubs, in which case he would want West to make whatever return seemed proper to him. To avoid signaling for a heart or a club return, East would lead a neutral diamond at trick two, say, the five or the seven. The low diamond return strongly suggests that East may have an entry in clubs, but more than that, it denies anything of value in hearts. Without the benefit of suit - preference signals, West would probably make the normal return of the heart queen at trick three and thus allow declarer to make his contract.

ordered a court-martial for Martelino. Malaysians Not Satisfied It did not, however, satisfy the Malaysians, just recovering from a confrontation with Indonesia on the same issue. This week, Dato Donald Stephens, former chief minister of Sabah, accused the Philippine government of attempting to force the issue by military means. “We had expected better things of Marcos,” he said, a comparatively mild statement when considering the issue. The Philippine claim on Sabah goes back to a deal made between the Sultan of Sulu and the British East India Company in 1710 and to a confusing series of agreements which followed involving Britain, Spain, the United States and to some extent Austria. The Philippines claim that since Sulu is Philippine, so is North Borneo. No other nation has supported the claim.
