Norris tabbed for All-Stars

By FRANK PUCKETT, JR. Banner Sports Editor DeWayne Norris today was tabbed as a quarterback for the 36-man South All-Star squad which will attempt to repeat its’ 1967 victory over the North when the Boys’ Clubs of Indiana game is played August 10 in Indiana University Stadium. Norris was quarterback for Greencastle’s high school football team during the past two campaigns, one of which they won the Western Indiana Conference. Norris, a lanky 6-3, one-hun-,dred seventy-three pounder, gained recognition this year by being everyone’s choice as the WIC all-star quarterback (second team) and was voted Most Valuable Back by his teammates. During the Cubs’ 7-3 season Norris scored 46 points, second to Jay Frye’s 48, and average 6.5 tackles per game as he played both offense and defense. As quarterback of the sqaud he connected on 30 of 73 attempts for 385 yards. Norris’ teammates in the quarterback slot are Plainfield’s Don Casselman and Indianapolis North Central’s Bob Hackleman. Halfback Tony Spicer and cen-

ter Steve Helmich of Richmond’s mythical state champion football team last year head the south squad while the north team is led by high-scoring Levi Mitchell of Gary Froebel and a host of interior linemen who plan to enroll in Big Ten schools this fall. The dividing line, same as last year, runs east and west on a line south of Anderson. The squads were picked by a vote of the state’s sportswriters and broadcasters taken last November when they also selected the Indiana Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association all-state team. Many of the all-states barely missed allstate selection. The teams again will be coached by Rick Carter of Earlham College for the South and Jack Jarrett of Manchester College for the north. Profits of the game will be shared by participating Boys Clubs all over Indiana to provide camperships for underprivileged boys and help finance new buildings for proposed nev

SOMETHING NEW---DePauw's track team has taken on a new event this year, its the Steeplechase. The run is approximately 3,000 meters long (a little less than two miles). The participant has to jump four barriers on each of the several laps he makes around the track. The barriers are

3' in height. On each lap there is one jump where the runner must first jump the barrier, then try to clear 12' of water on the other side. Track runners Scott Shafer, Tom Dascoli, Paul Blasdel, and Bill Syverson listen to steeplechase runner Dave Barnes (in the pit) as he explains the race to them.

Brazil blasts Tiger Cubs Brazil found little trouble in handling Greencastle 80-38 in a dual track meet on the DePauw University oval here Thursday. A1 Barcus’ Red Devils had 10 firsts in 14 events as they notched their third victory of the season against one loss. Distance ace Dan Fineran was the lone double winner for the Devils with victories in the mile and 880-yard runs, while teammate Amos Strong broke the school record with a winning pole vault of 12 feet, two inches. 120-Yard HighHurdles-Norris (G), Nicklasch (B), Clines (G), Hecko (G). Dominating what had shaped up as a close match the linkmen swept every match in registering their victory. Brazil defending Western Indiana Conference champions fielded a veteran team, as did Greencastle who was defeated for the title last year by one stroke. The first match between returning conference individual champion Dan Pollom of Brazil and Greencastle’s Dan Mont seemed to set the tempo of the entire match. Mont down early rallied and came on to win a 2-1 victory. Medalist honors however belonged to Green, castle’s Kirk Hammond who shot match and gave the Cubs 3 points toward their victory. Rob Lyons in a closely contested match came from far beto win 2 to 1 decision. C lark Finkbiner playing number 3 man, in a very close match with Miller of Brazil was victor, ious by a 2 to 1 count. Ron Cook of Greencastle added three points to the Cubs total by easily sweeping his match with Lybarger of Brazil. The victory was the Cubs first match of the season and made their record 1-0. Brazil’s record dropped to 1 -1. The two squads will meet twice more before tournament action starts. Greencastle’s next match is April 16th with Wiley at Terre Haute’s Rea Park.
