HOLLYWOOD (UPI>—Hollywood’s Oscar telecast, postponed because of Martin Luther King’s death, went on Wednesday night, and even the awards reflected the nation’s involvement with the racial issue. Named as the best picture

was “In the Heat of the Night,” a racially-themed film starring Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier. In addition, Steiger was named as best actor. And Katharine Hepburn was chosen for best actress, winning in the movie “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” an interracial love story. Furthermore, the writing awards went to both “In the Heat of the Night” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” Another theme reflected in the nation, violence, was
represented in awards “Bonnie and Clyde.” Estelle Parsons was named best supporting actress for her performance in the film. “Bonnie and Clyde,” however, was widely felt to be a superior movie cinematically than “In the Heat of the Night,” and it is interesting to speculate whether academy voters were making a moral judgment more fitting to
the times.
