At that moment, my son passed by and pushed the front domino, causing it to topple over. To my utter amazement, the other dominoes fell over too. “Look at that!” I exclaimed. “This must be an omen of some
kind. If I can figure out what it portends, I can make a fortune as a political prognosticator.” All that night I stayed awake thinking about the strange occurence and along about dawn its meaning became clear to me. I crawled on my hands and knees into the guest bedroom and took my father’s hand to awaken him.

Hoosier skies (By Indiana University Astronomy Department) The major astronomical event of April will be a total eclipse of the moon on the 12th, timed for convenient evening observation. The moon will begin to enter the penumbra, the outer (partial) shadow of the earth, at 9:11 p.m. (EST), at which stage only a slight dimming of the moon will be visible. The moon will appear “clipped” as it moves
into the umbra (complete shadow) at 10:10. The total eclipse stage will be reached at 11:23, and the moon will remain blacked out, except for the dim light refracted onto it by the earth’s atmosphere, until 12:12 a.m., when the moon will begin to leave the umbra. It will be completely out of the umbra by 1:25, and will leave the penumbra at 2:24. Jupiter is the only bright planet easily visible in evening skies this month. It stands high and nearly straight south about 10 p.m. in the constellation Leo, the lion. Nearby is the bright star Regulus in Leo. The moon will pass close by Jupiter and
Regulus on the evening of April 8. Mars is in the west for about an hour after sunset, but is so far away now that it is quite faint and apt to be lost in atmospheric haze. The other naked-eye planets are in the morning sky or invisible this month. Venus is moving toward the sun, rising only about 30 minutes before sunrise at the end of the month. Saturn is behind the sun April 4, then moves into the morning sky and is near Venus on the 23rd.
The waning moon will pass close to Saturn and Venus the night of April 25-26.
