Johnson’s announcement Sunday night that he would not seek reelection or accept the nomination. Other historic television moments with similar blockbuster effect also usually concerned the presidency. Overriding all of these occasions, of course, was the flash to the nation that President Kennedy had been assassinated. There then followed by four days of coverage of the aftermath. In addition, there was the fatal shooting, with all the nation looking on via television, of Lee Harvey Oswald, the alleged assassin of Kennedy. And there was the chilling speech of Kennedy, as President, about the showdown with Russia over the Cuban missile crisis—a moment that had

Americans knowing they were risking attack on these shores. Watching Johnson Sunday, one could not help but remember taht it was on television, in the wake of the Kennedy assassination, that he was sworn in during a dramatic ceremony, and asked for the

•X nation’s help. His stated withdrawal Sunday was all the more shocking because of his quiet, undramatic delivery. But one could also not help thinking that this chapter in American history would have found an appropriate place in John F. Kennedy’s book, “Profiles in Courage.’’
