Rep. Myers draws praise

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rep. John T. Myers (R., Ind.) has drawn the praise of three key Republicans in the House of Representatives, including House GOP Leader Gerald R. Ford, for his near-perfect attendance record and his contributions to legislative debate. Myers, who represents Indiana's seventh district, answered 230 of 245 roll calls in the first session of the 90th Congress for a 94 per cent record. Congressman Ford described Myers as "a diligent, dependable legislator who has built up a top-rate attendance record anc earned a reputation fbr sound

contributions to legislative debate.” Myers also was praised by Rep. Florence P. Dwyer of New Jersey, ranking Republican on the House Government Operations Committee of which Myers is a member. Mrs. Dwyer commended Myers for his incisive questioning of witnesses and for his “hard work on legislation.” The Committee oversees the economy generally and the efficiency of government activities. Myers has supported Republican efforts for a thoroughgoing, top-to-bottom reorganization of the Executive Branch, Congresswoman Dwyer noted. He

is a co-sponsor of a measure designed to improve the accounting systems in each Federal Department, a move that would save millions of tax dollars. Myers also won commendation from Rep. Page Belcher of Oklahoma, ranking Republican on the powerful House Agriculture Committee. Myers, a farmer himself has been an outspoken critic of present farm policies while at the same time promoting constructive proposals to restore the American farmer to his rightful place in the economy. Myers is the only member of the Indiana Congressional delegation to serve on this committee.

Heavy Fighting reported BANGKOK (UPI) — Heavy fighting between Communist guerrillas and government forces in north and northeast Thailand last week was report, ed by Premier Thanom Kittikachorn Monday. The guerrillas ambushed government forces three times and launched five nuisance raids against government outposts. The premier said government casualties were 4 dead and 11 wounded while the Communists lost 2 dead and 32 taken prisoner.

U.S. still commited says Rusk - WELLINGTON, New Zealand (UP!)— Secretary of State Dean Rusk said today that President Johnson’s decision not to run for re-election still leaves America committed in South Vietnam “and the United States is going to demonstrate its stability to its friends and allies.” Rusk, arriving for a Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) meeting, told newsmen the President’s order for a halt to bombing North Vietnam “is a

chance for a fresh start.” “Now let’s see what they do with it.” “Let’s find out what Hanoi’s reaction will be,” he said. When asked about Johnson’s refusal to run for re-election, Rusk said, “You can be sure that the United States is there and the United States is going to demonstrate its stability . . . I would not put your bets on anything else.” The secretary declined to speculate on the effect of the war of Johnson’s decision not to seek re-election. But he said, “President Johnson is a very great President and a great human being and he is going to be a great President between now and January.”

Blaine. Harrison’s triumph was the result of his Electoral College victory over Cleveland, 233 to 168.
