Saigon village of Tra Bong desperately needs two elephants
SAIGON (UPI)— All for the want of a three-ton elephant or two, American and South Vietnamese forces today stand to lose a little village they have labored long to keep out of Viet Cong hands. Tra Bong desperately needs two elephants to haul timber over the rough terrain around the sleepy valley hamlet. Machines have been tried and failed. The villagers say that without the elephants they will lose their only industry, a sawmill installed last year with help by U.S. Army Special Forces. Capt. Scott Gantt, 29, of Cross City, Fla., a Green Beret, told United Press International the sawmill loss would force about 400 families to leave Tra Bong. In would come the Viet Cong. The Berets went to work. With U.S. government aid Gantt bought two elephants for $590 at Ban Don. But Ban Don is 170 miles southwest of Tra Bong, located in an isolated valley on South Vietnam’s central coast, a guerrilla hunting ground. two elephants to Tra Bong, not only through Viet Cong jungle but through miles of military red tape. The Berets charged. They crossed off a land trip. Too long, too dangerous for jumbo. The Viet Cong controls the only road into Tra Bong. Boat? Too long and, besides, elephants get seasick and even big sampans are not made for green pachyderms. U.S. Marines offered to come to the rescue. They would ferry the elephants to Tra Bong from Chu Lai, 20 miles away, by helicopter skycranes which can lift a small house.
Democrats campaign By United Press International Democratic candidates had the presidential campaigning to themselves today, with Sen. Robert F. Kennedy pushing through Oregon and Sen Eugene J. McCarthy beginning the final seven days of the Wisconsin primary. Supporters of President Johnson appeared to have no plans for an intensive last minute drive to try to blitz McCarthy and deliver the President a majority in Wisconsin’s April 2 balloting. The Johnson camp had no rallies scheduled in the state until Friday when Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey returns, and the White House indicated the President probably will not go to Wisconsin himself. “We will just have to wait and see but I see no sign of it now,” White House Press Secretary George Christian said.

Big Sleep The U.S. 7th Air Force said all right, it would haul them. Just so the elephants would be contented passengers, Gantt spent hours on transoceanis phones, calling zoos in New York, Cleveland, Ohio, and London in search of a tranquilizer that would put the jumbos to sleep for the flight but not harm them. Zoo men told Gantt he needed M99, a potent drug made in Hull, England. He ordered it. But the U.S. Bureau of Narcotics upheld the shipment until American officials in Saigon sent a “required form” explaining just why they need M99 for just what kind of trip. The M99 arrived. Berets tested the drug on an elephant. The beast laid down for a nap. The Air Force decided it would be safe to fly the friendly skies with elephants under M99. The testers did notice that the drug appeared to upset jumbo’s tummy, producing a harmless intestinal gas. All seemed well. Plans went ahead for the big flight. It even got a codename— Operation Bah-Room. Bah-Room was supposed to blast off this week. But the plane ride was cancelled. Brig. Gen. H.A. Rasmussen, the Army’s assistant chief of staff for logistics for the U.S. forces in Vietnam, said no. “Technical difficulties have not been worked out. They have not been able to solve them,” said a spokesman for Rasmussen. Tra Bong waits for its elephants. “If they don’t come, we’ve lost 400 families. Unless we get those elephants up there, they’re quitting,” Gantt said. One of Gantt’s aides said, “I thought this war was for winning the hearts and minds of the people. The way it looks, we’re going to lose a lot of hearts and minds in Tra Bong.”
