Report from Washington froa coBgrtssMH Joha T. Meyers
In the wake of the international gold crisis, the Administration is once again talking of major cuts in domestic spending while at the same time pushing for the proposed 10 percent income tax surcharge. However, the Administration steadfastly refuses to establish any priorities in its budget requests which total more than $201 billion. Except to ask the American people to pay more in taxes, the Administration has all but ignored the fiscal crisis we find ourselves in today. Members of the minority warn-
ed of an imminent monetary crisis in a report on the gold drain issued in August of 1965 and have repeated the warning consistently since that time. The direct cause of the crisis is simple enough—it is lack of international confidence in the dollar. The “Gold Rush of 1968’’ reached such proportions that the Administration pushed through Congress a bill removing the gold cover from paper currency, thus freeing all our $12.4 billion in gold for conversion of dollars. The President signed the bill in
private ceremonies at the White House last week. I opposed this legislation because it failed to remedy the cause of the crisis--namely eight years of deficits and irresponsible spending. Last week the leading central banks of the Free World hammered out a revision of the international gold system by establishing a two-price structure for gold. The official exchange price between governments will continue at $35 an ounce while the price of gold in the world’s free
markets will be allowed to find its own level. At the same time, the central bankers have given the U. S. time to put our house in order by slashing the deficits in our domestic budget and the balance of payments. It will take more than promises from the Administration if we are to change the basic policies which have led to the dollar’s plight. The Administration must urge its own majorities in both the Senate and House to approve the sizable cuts in spending for which
the minority has been calling. It is urgently necessary for the President to come forth with meaningful specific proposals for major reductions in non-es-sential government spending. The budget must be brought close to balance and the deficit in our international payments must be sharply reduced if we are to restore faith in the dollar and avoid another crisis. Snow avalanche BERGAMO, Italy (UPI)— Rescue workers today dug through tons of snow in search of seven Italian mountain climbers engulfed by a giant avalanche Sunday in the Presolana Mountains. Hope was slim that the experienced climbers would be found alive.

4-H Club news
The first meeting of the Busy Belles 4-H Club of Belle Union was called to order at 3:45 on March 15 by Donna Frye, our local adult leader. The Pledge to the American Flag and the 4-H Flag were given. Mrs. Frye discussed the new projects in 4-H this year and told us about the Share the Fun festivals this year. She also explained how to fill out the enrollment cards and to have them in as soon as possible. Last year’s vice president, Carolyn Hurst, automatically became this year’s president. She handled the election of this year’s
officers. Marjorie McCammack was elected vice president; Nancy Arnold was chosen as secretary and reporter, and for treasurer Sue Clifford was elected. The new song leader for this year is Stephanie Vaughn. Sherry and Cinde McCammack are recreation leaders and Kathy Frye was elected as the current health and safety leader. Mrs. Frye told us about ordering flower seeds for 50 cents a package and told us to start thinking about our demonstrations. Those who attended the District Junior Leader Conference from our club on February 13
were recognized as follows: Sherry McCammack, who went in the song leaders class; Beverly Hurst, who also was in the song leaders class, and Nancy Arnold, who was enrolled in the recreation class. A discussion ' was held about selling 4-H signs. Mrs. Frye urged members to enter the Share the Fun festivals. Blake Signs HOLLYWOOD (UPI)—Robert Blake, who stars as one of the killers in “In Cold Blood.” has signed a six-picture deal with Columbia.
