Israeli forces raid Jordan By WALTER LOGAN United Press International Israeli forces smashed into Jordan today in what Israel termed a reprisal raid for Arab terrorist attacks launched from Jordanian soil. Jordan said it was under fire from Israeli jets, tanks*, paratroopers and infan. try all along their Jordan River border but had the situation “absolutely under control.” The predawn Israeli strike marked the first time Israel’s forces had entered Arab territory since the June 5-10 war the Jewish state won against its Arab neighbors. In Jerusalem, Israeli spokesmen gave no details of the Holy Land battling. An Israeli broadcast merely said Israel’s forces would withdraw from Jordan “after completing their mission.” An earlier communique said the attack aimed at the saboteur bases Israel claims are clustered near her June war cease fire line with Jordan. In Amman, Jordanian military spokesmen said three Israeli jet fighters had been shot down. They said 25 Israeli tanks and tracked vehicles had been destroyed. They said “hand to hand” combat raged near the Arab refugee camp of AlKarama, close to the cease-fire line and northeast of Damiah Bridge. The Jordanians said fighting was underway all along their line with Israel. In Jerusalem, Israeli’s oneeyed hero of the 1956 and 1967 Arab wars, Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, charted the battling from a hospital bed. He was reported in “good” condition after breaking two ribs and cracking a vertebra while digging for Biblical relics Wednesday. The battling followed Israeli warnings against Arab terror, ism and sabotage and fear, among diplomats in Amman, that just such action was coming to disrupt the delicate cease-fire of the past 10 months. Israeli said a mounting tide of Arab sabotage raids triggered the reprisal. The Jewish state said Arab terrorists based in

Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF OPEAKING about all the polls being taken to ascertain the degree of public approval of our Viet Nam policy, don’t overlook the one reported from an Indian reservation in New Mexico. Twentyone per cent of the people questioned there thought we should get out of Viet Nam. Ninetynine per cent thought we should get out of New Mexico. OOO Harking back to the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, the standout attraction of the whole affair was a buxom belly dancer named “Little Egypt." Well, her great-granddaughter is plying the same trade to this very day, and doing very nicely at it, too. Only thing bothering her mind at the moment is the unpopularity of Egypt in general and Nasser in particular. In fact, if there isn’t a settlement soon, 1968’s Little Egypt may well change her name to Little Israel! * • • SIGNS OF THE TIMES: In window of a strike-bound bar and grille: “Closed for altercations.” At the boundary line of Irontown, Texas: “Population: 1. Drive carefully. The life you save may be George Jones’." And a used-book dealer in Brooklyn has a sign in his seldomwashed window proclaiming “My assets are over ten million dollars." He isn’t kidding, either. His office is directly above a branch of the Chase Manhattan Bank. O 1968, by Bennett Cerf. Distributed by King Features Syndicate.
Jordan had struck at least 37 times the past month. In Amman, military spokes, men said the main battling lay in the area of the Ala Karama refugee camp, 2.5 miles east of the river, between the Allenby and Damiah bridges. Jordanian spokesmen said the Israeli here made their main thrust, using jet fighter.bombers, armor and helicopter.borne troops. 0 0 9 Italy is about 760 miles long and 220 miles across at its widest point.
