Newsom named ‘MVP’; McCall ‘coach of year’
Indiana State, DePauw, Evansville and Butler all have placed starters on the eighteenth annual all - Indiana Collegiate Conference basketball team announced today. State’s Jerry Newsom was the unanimous choice on every ballot as the league’s number one player, sewing up therefore the coveted MVP award won last year by his teammate Butch Wade. Named to the charmed circle of five with the 6-6 Newsom were Evansville’s 6-6 Howard Pratt, DePauw’s 6-5 Tom McCormick, Butler’s 6-0 Doug Wininger, and 6-8 Rich Mason of Indiana State. McCormick is the only junior on the squad. The rest are seniors. All are front line men with the exception of Wininger. Hardly a surprise was the selection of DePauw’s Elmer McCall as the ICC’s Coach-of-the-Year. Taking a team picked to finish fourth in the league, McCall steered the darkhorse Tigers to the ICC co-champion-ship, a 16-8 season, and an NCAA bid. He received every first place vote but one from his colleagues. The all-ICC second team is a collection of talent from St.
Joseph’s, Evansville, Valparaiso and DePauw. Eighty - percent seniors, like the first unit, the second five includes Valparaiso’s top scorer Dick Jones, Evansville’s 6-8 Tom Niemeier and 6-2 Jerry, Mattingly, St. Joseph’s promising sophomore 6-3 Ted Hillary, and DePauw’s 6-7 center Tom McGurk. Jones was a first-team selection last year while McGurk is a repeater on the second team. All the rest of the number two unit are newcomers to postseason honors. Newsom, who led the ICC in scoring with a 27.3 average, was the sole repeater from last year’s first team. He also made the top five as a sophmore. McCormick, Pratt and Wininger were 2, 9, and 11 in ICC scoring while Mason finished first in individual rebounding. McCormick averaged 20.6, Pratt 15.6 and Wininger 15.1. Newsom, Wininger and Mason were first (.562), third (.558) and tenth (.505) in field goal accuracy and Wininger and McCormick were first (.896) and third (.869) in free throw marksmanship. Ball ‘State and Butler each put two men on the honorable mention squad that included six players.
Gary Miller and Marzine Moore represented Ball State while Bill Mauck and John Nell drew votes for Butler. Also named were Indiana State’s Mike Copper and St. Joseph’s Chuck Lamm. In the balloting for most valuable player, Newsom led the field with 60 points, gathering a first place ballot from every coach in the league except one. (Coaches cannot vote for their own players). Behind him came Pratt (47), McCormick (34), Mason (33), and Wininger (29). Finishing behind McCall, who became the first DePauw basketball coach ever to win the COTY award, were Evansville’s Arad McCutchan and Indiana State’s Gordon Stauffer who finished in a near deadheat as runnersup to McCall. Twenty-nine players were nominated by their coaches for all-conference consideration. The five capturing the most votes on a 10-9-8-7-6 etc. basis were named to the first team and the next highest five to the second team. Honorable mention was accorded those players who failed to make the top 10, but who received mention on ballots of at least two coaches.

"RUN BABY. RUN"
St. Peter’s College in Heaven, Kansas set on NIT cloud burst
By SANDY PRISANT UPI Sports Writer NEW YORK (UPI)—St. Peter’s College will be back for the semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament Thursday night because it saw the handwriting on the wall Monday night. . .and followed it to the letter. Scrawled on the blackboard inside the door to the Peacock dressing room were the thicklylettered words “Run Baby, Run. Each player on the squad glanced quickly at it as he headed out toward the court and moments later St. Peter’s showed the largest crowd ever to attend a basketball game in New York how to fast break for 40 minutes on glass slippers.
Before a delirious, partisan crowd of f9,500 the Peacocks gave the NIT its second fairy tale in three days, thrashing llth-ranked Duke 100-71 and gaining the opportunity to knock off another seeded team, Kansas, in the semis. The Jayhawks advanced by squelching Villanova 55-49 in the first game of the Madison Square Garden doubleheader. St. Peter’s knew it would take a lot to grab the Cinderella label in this 31st edition of the nation’s oldest post-season tournament after the small college national champs from Long Island University had stunned Bradley 80-77 on Saturday. Never Sure But the Peacocks put things

By MILTON RICHMAN UPI Sports Writer COCOA, Fla. (UPI)—Some people feel they ought to shorten the baseball season. Grady Hatton has a better idea. He thinks they should shorten the games. He can’t really be blamed for feeling that way. His Houston Astros lost 18 games in which they were leading in the eighth and ninth innings last season. “All defensive lapses,’’Hatton mutters. “The one thing we have to do this year is tighten our defense. If we can do that, and if we can get the pitching, we’ll move up a lotta notches.” Houston finished ninth in 1967 but has made a few changes since. The Astros have gotten pitcher Denny Lemaster and infielder Denis Menke from Atlanta and reliever Fred Gladding from Detroit. Hatton bubbles over about his pitching staff. He lists Mike Cuellar, Larry Dierker, Don Wilson and Lemaster as his regular star:ers. Cueller won 16 last year, Dierker, 6, Wilson, 10, and Lemaster 9. That leaves him such other possibilities as Dave Giusti, who lad an 11-15 record; Wade Blasingame, who was 5-7, and youngsters Danny Coombs, Bruce Von Hoff, Chris Zachary ind Jim Ray. Gladding, who had a 6-4 slate with Detroit, heads a relief 2rew which also numbers Larry Sherry, Carrol Sembera and
Dave Eilers and Hatton also has Joe Moeller, John Buzhardt and
Tom Dukes.
“I feel great about my pitching,” says Hatton, beginling his third year as manager
of the Astros.
The catching is another story. It doesn’t figure to be strong unless rookie Hal King wins the first string job. King, a lefty swinger, batted .288 with Asheville and led the Carolina League with 30 homers. The
tired near the end of the year. So he’s being shifted from center to left where he won’t have so much running to do. Davis hit only .256 but can do the job defensively. Lee Thomas, acquired from the Cubs, could be the fourth outfielder or possibly Ivan Murrell, a rookie who hit .289 with Oklahoma City and had 82 RBI’s. The oldest story in spring training— the one about the rookie and the veteran— is giving Manager Eddie Stanky and the Chicago White Sox new confidence this spring. The veteran is 33-year-old shortstop Luis Aparicio and the rookie is 27-year-old pitcher Cisco Carlos. Aparicio had a poor 1967 season with the Baltimore Orioles but is the key man oi the White Sox’ 1968 infield. Tim Cullen, his double play partner, will be playing his first season with a pennant contender and Stanky apparently plans tc alternate his first and third
basemen.
Carlos is a 6-foot, 3-inch, 205pound right-hander who had an 11-8 record and 2.63 earned run average for Indianapolis in the Pacific Coast League and a 2-0 mark and 0.86 ERA in eight games with the White Sox last season. The odds are against him even making the strong White Sox’ pitching staff but he
is bidding for the No. 4 starting assignment behind Joel Horlen, Gary Peters and Tommy John. White Sox’ Win Both starred along with Pete Ward Monday when the White Sox defeated the Orioles 5-1 for their sixth victory in 11 games. Aparicio had a triple and a single, raising his spring average to .429, and Carlos pitched five shutout innings in his first starting effort of the
spring.
Ward’s contribution was a three-run homer and Tommy Davis added two singles, raising his spring average to .417. Gary Nolan, Jim Maloney and Mel Queen scattered 12 hits as the Cincinnati Reds ran their winning streak to seven games with a 5-2 triumph over the New York Mets. Tony Perez’ double and rookie Hal McRae’s two-run homer were the big blows for the Reds, now 8-1 for the
spring.
Reserve catcher John Edwards delivered two singles in a six-run ninth-inning rally that carried the St. Louis Cardinals past the Philadelphia Phillies 87. Pinch-hitter Floyd Wicker’s two-run double and Bobby Tolan’s two-run single were other big blows in the frame as the Cardinals overcame an

other catching candidates are oarlv 7 n twin* Ron Brand, John Bateman and
Dave Adlesh.
Doug Radar is the nominal :$ first baseman. He batted .333 in 47 games with the Astros lasf <:■ year and .293 in 75 contests with jx Oklahoma City. Nate Colbert, a .293 hitter with Amarillo, also is
in contention.
Joe Morgan will be back at second looking to improve his .275 average and rookie Hector Tornes, who hit only .214 with Seattle but can do things with the glove, has first call on the shortstop job left open by the deal sending Sonny Jackson to Atlanta. If Torres doesn’t cut it, Menke will be the shortstop. Bob Aspromonte, a .294 hitter, is the third baseman although Hatton can always play radar on Menke at the position, too. The outfield should be strong with Rusty Staub in right, Ron Davis in center and Jim Wynn in left. Staub came close to leading the league with his .333. Wynn had 107 RBI’s and 37 homers but complained of being

Ready 6 planes for Viet duty In nearby Thailand, chief launching site for the air raiding of North Vietnam, the U.S. Air Force poised six Fill swing-wing jets for their crucial combat test. The flights to decide if the controversial allpurpose craft is America’s greatest warplane or a multibillion dollar bust were expected within a few days. In their 59 missions against North Vietnam Sunday, U.S. pilots in slower jets struck roads, supply boats and storage areas in the southern panhandle. Pilots reported sighting no
Mig jets.
In South Vietnam, U.S. Air Force B52 Stratofortresses dropped tons of 750-pound bombs on a guerrilla truck depot 17 miles southwest of Hue, the battered city 400 miles up the coast from Saigon. The truck park was said to lay at the end of a SO-mile-long jungle highway built by the Communists to feed their forces on the move in South Vietnam’s northern sector. Never before had the Communists been known to have a truck depot so deep inside South Vietnam.

under control quickly. As Elnardo Webster, the 6-5 forward who had a game-high 29 points, put it, “After five minutes of play I still wasn’t sure we had it. After six minutes I was.” Webster, who now has a twogame NIT total of 80 points, poured in 21 points while center Pete O’Dea and Harry Laurie combined for 15 more as the Peacocks scored the game’s first five points, had a 15-3 lead after three and a half minutes and had a 50-29 bulge when they walked off the court to a standing ovation at halftime. O’Dea finished with 26 points after almost single-handedly demoralizing a huge Duke front line on the boards. While showing again that they are the most accurate field goal shooting team in the nation and the most prolific scorers besides UCLA and Houston, St. Peter’s was just as brilliant on defense. Faced with the task of stopping the most muscular team in the tournament and specifically third team AllAmerica Mike Lewis, the Peacocks put a man right in front and right behind the 6-8 center, hoping he would foul no matter which way he turned, “We knew he fouled a lot so we decided to get him out,” O’Dea said matter of factly. Rough Sport ST. LOUIS (UPI) — Mrs. Gerry Melnyk, wife of the St. Louis Blues hockey player, is an amateur seamstress who says some of her needlework is less complicated than her husband’s. “Over the years he’s had about 100 stitches on his head,” she said. “When you’re a professional hockey player, there are always cuts and bruises.” Longtime Mark IOWA CITY, Iowa (UPI) — The single-game scoring record for University of Iowa basketball players has remained unbroken since 1944, when Dick Ives scored 43 points against the University of Chicago. NKD protests low prices SOUTH BEND, Ind. (UPI)St. Joseph and Marshall County members of the National Farmers Organization Monday protested what they consider low prices for farm products by burning more than 1,000 bushels of corn Monday. Loyal Burkholder, the head of the St. Joseph County NFO, said 60 to 75 farmers participated in the corn burning on a member’s farm on Indiana 4 in the county. He said NFO members in Elkhart and Kosciusko counties planned to burn more than 1,200 bushels of corn later in the day. GOP workshops are planned INDIANAPOLIS (UPI)—Educational programs for Republlcan candidates for seats in the next Indiana Legislature will be held after the May 7 primary under sponsorship of GOP members of the present legislature. Two workshops are planned May 24-25 and later in the summer for Senate candidates, and a similar workshop is planned by a House committee. The groups jointly hope to survey the GOP nominees for their individual opinions of the top issues likely to prevail during the campaign, with results to be submitted to the GOP state platform committee.
