On The Lighter Side
By DICK WEST WASHINGTON (UPI) - The "national austerity" program proposed by President Johnson may be a wise move, but I do wish he had given it another name. The term simply does not inspire confidence as a remedy for economic ills. For that is what the British have been calling whatever it is they do when they are in financial difficulty. And if national austerity has the same results here that it
has had in Britain, the United States will end up with a devalued pound and Twiggy. Mark me down as a sentimentalist, but I sort of long for the days when U.S. presidents reacted to emergencies by seizing the railroads. There was something reassuring having the government take over the railroads. It provided drastic action without drastic consequences, such as causing the trains to run on schedule. Railroads”—I daresay a headline like that would do more to restore confidence in the dollar than a trainload of austerity programs. There is a good chance, however, that national austerity will work better here than it has in Britain. For one thing, our approach is different. The British undertake austerity by listing things they can do without. The American way is to begin austerity by listing the exemptions. By the time we have named
all of the things that shouldn’t be curtailed by austerity, the crisis probably will be over. But should worse come to worst, some sacrifices may be required. With that in mind, I have already started thinking in terms of government services I would be willing to forego in the interest of international monetary stability. One thing I would voluntarily give up is overseas trips by congressmen. I fully realize the lawgivers make these journeys for my benefit. But they do cost money and as long as the balance of payments is unfavorable I think I could steel myself to do without them. While it would pain me to do so, I also would consider giving
up tne new Senate code of ethics. The key segment requires senators to make an accounting of their personal finances—in sealed envelopes. This is known as "secret disclosure." The data could conceivably serve some future purpose but in a time of national austerity can we afford the extra filing cabinets? What Taxes? BUENNOS AIRES (UPI) — Merchants of Catamarca, one of Argentina’s 22 provinces, don’t like paying their taxes any more than anybody else — and maybe even less so. A recent national tax investigation showed that only about 6 per cent of the people were filling out their sales tax forms without cheating.
Organize to back Rocky
By HORTENSE MYERS INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) - An informal organization backing New York Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller was working today in an effort to get his name in the Indiana presidential preference primary. But a spokesman for the Indiana Nixon for President organization, which has urged Rockefeller to get into the Hoosier primary and create a contest, expressed doubt that the little group backing the New York governor could succeed by the March 28 deadline. George Walton, a 26-year.old
law student irom Louisville, confirmed in a telephone call today that he and several other young persons have begun efforts to get Rockefeller’s name in the Indiana primary. Visited His Aides Walton, who conferred in New York last weekend with Rockefeller aides, said "we are trying to encourage him to enter." Walton said he has taken a leave of absence from his law studies at the University of Louisville this semester because of his conviction "I couldn’t mark an X beside any of the names which apparently will be
on the ballot in November." Walton said "the’ American people deserve a better choice than President Johnson, Rich, ard Nixon and George Wallace.” "The President doesn’t seem to be able to come to grips with basic problems and the spirit of the country is dead. Mr. Nixon is trying to mean all things to all people," he said. The informal Rockefeller group plans a meeting this weekend at which a decision on whether to drop their efforts or try for a crash program to get (continued on Page 14)
