Yank back in Georgia

COLUMBUS, Ga. (UPI>— Ervin Joseph Foster, 25, one of the eight Americans granted asylum today by the Swedish Aliens Commission, is at Ft. Banning, Ga.— not in Sweden. Foster, a former radio newsman from Anniston, Ala., who lists Blackshear, Ga., as his home, turned himself in to Ft. Banning authorities Sunday night. He had been listed as AWOL since February 20. Col. Robert A. Sullivan, post information officer, reported Monday that Foster was in military custody, and then reported later that he had been released from custody and was

undergoing normal processing into active duty. Foster, who had served six months active duty as a reservist, had been in Sweden, friends said. They said he wrote that he planned to stay in Sweden. It was not known why he changed his mind. Foster, a divorced father of one child, was in a reserve control group which was called up for active duty in midFebruary. Instead, Foster wrote his friends, he went to Sweden. He said he planned to learn the language and try to get a job on a Swedish newspaper.

Foreign news commentary

By PHIL NEWSOM UPI Foreign News Analyst Communist trenches have reached the outer wire entanglements protecting the besieged U.S. Marine fortress at Khe Sanh, and Dien Bien Phu comes back as a common word in the language after a 14-year absence. The Marines say Khe Sant never will be another Dien Bier Phu, the ill-fated French fortress whose fall on May 7. 1954, broke the will of the French in Indo-China. North Vietnamese propagandists say it will become a “real

graveyard” for American troops. Both sides agree that the battle for Khe Sanh could be the turning point of the war. Makes Comparisons Whatever may be the intentions of Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap, the winner over the French at Dien Bien Phu and chief North Vietnamese strategist in this war, there are comparisons that are noteworthy. These are not confined to geographic similarities b u t achieve special importance when studied in connection with overall North Vietnamese intent

and overall strategy of the war as the North Vietnamese are fighting it. It may be assumed that one intent is to inflict a humiliating defeat on the Americans with its resultant effect on homefront morale and to render at least two and possibly five of South Vietnam’s northernmost provinces indefensible. This would depend upon one Communist victory at Khe Sanh and another in the Central Highlands in the vicinity of Dak To to open the way to the South China sea coast, possibly as far south as Qui Nhon.

.V ;X !v

Earlier Strategy This was believed to be the Communist strategy in late 1964 and early 1965 when they began attacking in~regimental strength before the United States entered the war in force. Had the strategy been successful, they then could have approached the conference table from a position of strength. In 1954, as Giap closed his trap on the French at Dien Bien Phu, he simultaneously was expanding his hold on the kingdom of Laos. It could be that Giap is looking for a long, long war, or

that he is planning to throw in the works in a massive twopronged drive from both north and west. Nab speeder SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (UPI)— John Slick, 26, Shelbyville, was arrested Monday night on reckless driving and speeding charges after a chase in which Winston L. Churchill, the new Indianapolis police chief, participated. Churchill was driving toward his home at Boggstown when he saw two cars drag racing without lights on Interstate 74 near Acton. Churchill said he tried to stop one of the cars but it eluded him at a speed of more than 100 miles per hour.

Soft Seat BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (UPI)—The newest use for foam plastic is for saddles. Researchers at Phillips Petroleum Company, using a new foam plastic process, have produced an experimental saddle almost 100 per cent from plastic and so near in appearance to leather that most people have to touch it before believing it’s plastic. Paying A Debt BEIRUT (UPI) — Mexican millionaire film producer Miguel Zakarias plans to make four English-language films in Lebanon, starting this summer. “I owe it to my ancestors who came from Lebanon,” said Zakarias while inspecting possible shooting locations here.
