Dear Heloise: How can I clean the baked-on grease off a black cast iron skillet 9 Mrs. Ely If you are talking about the OUTSIDE of an iron skillet, I sugguest using oven cleaner. According to how old your skillet is and how thick the crust is, it might take more than one application. However, I have found this method extremely satisfactory and have used it often with the best results. I do NOT suggest using oven cleaners INSIDE of any skillet. Lots of oven cleaners contain lye. As we all know, lye is poisonous. And who wants the inside of a cast iron skillet shiny anyway? What we strive for and look for is an OLD skillet which has been broken in. This is called “seasoning”. The same applies to waffle irons. We receive many letters from people who want the inside of their waffle irons light and silvery looking again. I wish I could trade my waffle iron for a used, broken-in one which is black on the inside. It makes far better waffles and cooks better with less sticking. If you insist on the inside of your skillet being new looking again...put the EMPTY (castiron only) skillet in a bonfire or burn-

ing fireplace and leave it there awhile. After the fire dies and the skillet is cool, then scour it. But it will have to be reseasoned again. Heloise Dear Heloise: Our outside water faucets come out of the side of the house right over my flower beds. When I watered the flowers with the garden hose I was forever breaking and mashing some of the little tender plants under and near the faucet. I had my husband cut the hook off a wire coat hanger and bend it into a deep M. I stuck this M into the ground near the front edge of the flower bed and let the hose lie in the M part of the hanger. Now when I pull it back and forth to water both ends of the flower bed, the hose doesn’t drag through the small plants near the faucet. Army wife LETTER OF THOUGHT Dear Heloise: There are three sides to every argument. Your side My side And the RIGHT side! M. D. (Continued on Page 3)
