Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF Til’ll. MULVEY confessed to a group of convivials that he A frequently stayed out carousing until the wee hours of the morning. “When you’re neglecting your wife that way, doesn’t she miss you a lot?” “I’m afraid she doesn’t,” confessed Mr. Mulvey. “She has excellent aim!” • • * The late Dorothy Parker, warned by her doctor that if she didn’t quit drinking, she’d die within a year, mocked him by murmuring, “Promises, promises!’’ She once told a class at Vassar, “My life has been something like Oscar Levant’s. His mother always urged him to send home any money he saved so she could put it in a bank for him. So he sent her his money— and she did put it in the bank. A week later the bank failed.’’ *00 QUICKIES: A candidate for a PH.D. walked out of his oral examination in a rage, proclaiming, “Those old fogies in there tried to chase me off my own premises!” "I’ve reached the end of my patience,” a husband told his lawyer. “My mother-in-law runs the house and we have to do every dam thing she tells us to.” "Be a man,” advised the lawyer. "Kick her out!” "I can’t,” murmured the husband. "It’s her house!” Then there was the dog who went to the flea circus and stole the whole show. O 1968, by Bennett Cerf. By HORTENSE MYERS INDIANAPOLIS ( U P I ) - Books of trading stamps, which many women save to obtain wanted items for their homes or families, will be put to an unusual use in Indiana. They will pay a gubernatorial con. vention fee. Mrs. Ruth M. Bole, Van Buren, 5th District Democratic vice chairman, launched a campaign here today to collect enough trading stamps to pay the $2,500 convention filing fee for Lt. Gov. Robert L. Rock, one of two announced candi. dates for governor at the party’s convention, June 21. Mrs. Bole, who admits to being a trading stamp hoarder, said she suggested the plan to Rock’s other campaign officials and they thought it was a good idea. “Any woman who gives away a book of trading stamps has made a real sacrifice,” she observed. Verse Asks Help Mrs. Bole is state women’s coordinator for Rock’s gubernatorial bid. She composed a verse whcch is being mailed to Democratic women throughout the state asking each to donate a book of trading stamps. She estimated it will take 850 books and predicted she will have no trouble in getting them. She said women have joined to accumulate enough stamps to buy school buses and other expensive objects. Art contest for children The Putnam County Art League is planning a children’s art competition to be held April 7 at the League Gallery, 515 Anderson. This show will be limited to children in grades 1-6. Pictures may be in any media; however, they must be framed or matted. Each Art teacher in every elementary school in the county has been asked to cooperate in the selection of twelve to fifteen pictures from his school. The main objective of the show will be to award prizes in each grade level and to have the best representation from all the elementary grade levels in the county. The Art League will give ten cash awards totaling $50.00. A. Reid Winsey, head of DePauw Art Department, will serve as judge of the show. The show will open with a tea to which the public is invited on Sunday, April 7 from 2:00 until 6:00. Prizes will be awarded at 3:00 p.m. Children who are interested in entering should ask their school art teacher for details. Kidnaped GUATEMALA CITY (UPI)Police today stepped up a search for the kidnaped archbishop of Guatemala, the Most Rev. Mario Casriego, who church officials said is suffering from high blood pressure. Archbishop Casariego was kidnaped Saturday by underground terrorists. Church officials went on the air Sunday night to broadcast a “humanitarian plea” from his doctor, Carlos Perez Avendano, urging kidnapers to see that the archbishop was given medicines he needs to keep his blood pressure at normal level. They said the archbishop was abducted while en route by automobile from the papal nuncio’s office to the archbishop’s palace. Demetrio Reyes, the archbishop’s chauffeur, also was missing. The government said it was investigating the disappearance. There were few immediate details on the kidnaping. Howev. er, members of the antigovern, ment terrorist armed forces for national liberation have been active in recent weeks. There have been similar kidnapings recently for ransom to finance the terrorist movement.
Cookies for Morale SILVERTON, Ore. tUPI) — Operation Morale, a program here to provide cookies to servicemen around the world, celebrated Its first annlversay recently. The group has sent more than 100,000 cookies to more than 300 servicemen during the past year.
The fee charged by a political party for candidates who wish to go before a state convention was another good use, Mrs. Bole concluded. Politics has been a serious hobby for Mrs. Bole her husband, Gerald, and their family for much of their lives. The couple met while they were students at Van Buren High School. They have three children and tjiree grandchildren. Their son-in-law, Eric Welch, is 5th district Young Democratic chairman. Girls’ State Counselor Mrs. Bole recalled that when she was asked to be a govern, ment counselor at Hoosier Girl’s State, the annual encampment for high school girls sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, “I had to try to explain government to girls at the top of their class and I had to learn more about government.” She has served six times as a Hoosier Girl’s State Counselor and now finds politics takes so much time she can’t spend the hours she once did on American Legion volunteer Foreign News Commentary By PHIL NEWSOM UPI Foreign News Analyst Italians looking forward to next May’s general elections have a new numbers game. This concerns chances of the Communists and the nonCommunists left to duplicate their gains of the last general elections in 1963 and then what would become of Italy. It would take a shift of a bare 4 per cent of the vote to give the Communists and their allies a one-seat majority in the 630seat Italian Chamber of Deputies and to make numerically possible for the first time a leftwing “peoples front” Italian government. Within the complicated Italian political picture a number of combinations are possible. One could see Christian Democrats, for the last 23 years the dominant political force in Italy, joining in coalition with neo-Fascists, monarchists and so-called liberals to form a government of the center-right. Another would be to continue as things now are with a coalition of Christian Democrats and the Socialists who together presently have a comfortable 361-seat majority. A third would be a Christian Democrat coalition with the Communists, unthinkable 20 years ago but not so far-fetched now. Least likely, and impossible in case of strong leftwing gains in the coming elections, would appear to be a Christian Democrat coalition with the extreme right. The last such government in 1960 was toppled by bloody Communist riots and the Christian Democrats dislike the idea almost as much as do their Socialist allies. The best reason for thinking that the new elections will bring about a continuation of today’s center-left government seems to be Premier Aldo Moro. Moro has led the center-left coalition since 1963. Under him, Italy has prospered and for the last couple of years has led the rest of Europe in its economic development.
events. Mrs. Bole also works as field representative for the Indiana Department of Revenue, and formerly was a state driver examiner and worked in a license branch for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. She has been state poppy chairman for the legion auxiliary two years and received an award for 300 hours of volunteer work in the Veterans Administration Hospital at Marion. Roachdale club meets The Town and Country Homemakers Club met March 14 at the beautiful new home of Madonna Barker. The thought for the month “Nine Thoughts for a Contented Life” was given by Martha Boruff. The pledge to the American and Christian flags and the homemakers creed was said in unison. The lesson “Gaining Poise and Self-confi-dence was given by Betty Sendmeyer. A cancer quiz is to be given at the meeting next month. Also an auction of home baked goodies will be held and each member is to wear a hat made from a kitchen item. Several gifts were given for mental health patients, a planter and card were sent to Barbara Brookshire, who is in the hospital and a thank-you card was read from Virginia Crosby thanking the club for her going-away gift. Two new members were taken into the club, Penny Stout and Lucia Doruff. Betty Burdette reported on the free first-aid lessons to be given for five weeks starting March 19, from 1:00 to 3:00 each Tuesday. The meeting was closed with the club prayer and a social hour followed with refreshments being served by Ruth Crosby and Madonna Barker. Dies Saturday MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (UPI) — Sister Mary Fridian, dean of the St. Francis graduate school at Fort Wayne, died late Saturday night at St. Anthony's Hospital here following a lengthy illness. Burial was scheduled for Wednesday at the St. Francis Seraph Mother House at Mishawaka.

KEY WEST, Fla. (UPI)Vacationing Harry S. Truman, the ex-president who “adopted” this seafarers’ outpost as his favorite retreat, hoped a fickle Florida sun would shine today on his return to his old haunts. Truman, 83, and his wife, Bess, were rained in Sunday at their ocean-front villa. The showers started as they arrived by Air Force jet Saturday afternoon. The showers let up only briefly Sunday morning.
Truman’s host, former Florida State Sen. John Spottswood, said following a visit with the aging couple Sunday, “He’s glad to be back anyway” in the town where he had his “Little White House” when he was president. Joining the Trumans for dinner Saturday night were their daughter, Margaret, her husband, Clifton Daniel, managing editor of the New York Times, and their two oldest children.
