Quest::®, answers on draft

Set out below, according to Colonel Robert K. Custer, State Director of the Indiana Selective Service System, are questions most frequently asked of the Selective Service System along with appropriate answers. Question: My draft board wouldn’t defer me in Class II-S because I had not made nor-! mal progress toward my baccalaureate degree, but they gave me a Class I-S(C) deferment. The board said this was good for a year. If I’ve made normal progress by then, can I get Class II-S again?

Answer: Yes, providing you request a II-S deferment, can provide the local board with evidence that you are then satisfactorily pursuing a full-time course of instruction, and you are still under the age of 24. Question: Do I still have a right of appeal after I have had a personal appearance before my local board? Answer: Yes. Each classification, or determination made by your local board not to reopen your classification following your personal appearance, shall be followed by the same

right of appeal as in the case of the original classification. Question: What are the types of conscientious objector classifications? Answer: In Class I-A-0 are those who have been found, by reason of religious training and belief, to be conscientiously opposed to combatant training

and service. In Class 1-0 are i in any form and to be conscienplaced those who have been tiously opposed to participation found, by reason of their relig- {in both combat and noncombatious training aqd belief, to be ant training and service in the conscientiously opposed to war ! armed forces.

Bishop’s Bread For Easter Day

Women the world over enjoy serving special holiday breads on Easter Day. The Viennese, perhaps the world’s most skillful bakers, have a traditional favorite, the classic Viennese Bishop’s Bread. Somewhat like fruitcake, it’s made with raisins, candied cherries, nuts and the added goodness of semi-sweet chocolate pieces. Softtype margarine containing liquid safflower oil adds its own fine flavor to the recipe, too. And because of the margarine’s soft consistency, both the batter and frosting are simple to prepare. It combines easily with other ingredients . . . right from the refrigerator. Service Bishop’s Bread with a luscious Lemon Spread for Easter breakfast or with tea later in the day. It keeps well, too, —truly an international favorite that would do the most skillful Viennese proud! Bishop’s Bread . . • •

Often used product is little known By JOANNE OMANG COLONY, Wyo. UPI-What is used in sheep dips, wines, cos1 metic and fire extinguishers, ab- [ sorbs 15 times its weight in water, and once was used to wash clothes and grease axles? It’s bentonite, a strange volcanic clay compound now being pulled out of the ground in a new million-dollar plant here. Cattle being driven along the Old Chisholm Trail used to bog down in bentonite sloughs, which settlers called “soap holes” because the slick yellow stuff could be used to wash clothes. It also proved useful as a kind of axle grease for wagon wheels. Bentonite has so many uses that it’s always an ingredient of something else but the average man has never heard of it. About 85 per cent of the current production, much of that in the Black Hills area of South Dakota and Wyoming, is used in oil drilling muds. A lot is employed to make a slurry for fighting forest fires, and some goes to wineries for use as a purifying agent. Geologists say the Black Hills variety of the mineral was formed millions of years ago by volcanic ash and lava settling to the bottom of a disappearing inland sea. Another thing bentonite does —it ruins roads. One of the most absorbent materials in nature can hold a glass of water, and swells to 15 times its original size. If a roadbed exposse bentonite to the weather, or if it causes water to drain down to a bentonite layer, the bentonite swells and buckles the road. But western South Dakotans say they can spare a few roads for the sake of the slick yellow stuff, which is fast becoming the area’s largest industry.

Fed up LONDON UPI - Parliament member Joyce Butler Thursday complained to Prime Minister Harold Wilson that women “are fed up with being exploited as pretty birds when they are young and as silly moos when they are old.” Wilson told her he would consider establishing a board to combat discrimination against women.
