INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Andy Granatelli was expected to be cross-examined today by United States Auto Club attorneys in the trial of his suit against USAC in federal court. Granatelli testified Monday that USAC had maliciously and willfully made rules hampering performance of the controversial turbine-driven race car. Examined by his own attorneys, Granatelli said a heat shield USAC requested he place around the engine resulted in a weight penalty and reduced the horsepower the engine produced. Robert Morgan, chief defense counsel, objected, saying the heat problem was not mentioned in the 2.200-question deposition taken previously. Judge William Steckler overruled the objection. Granatelli said the shield and miscalculations of horsepower used to drive a four-wheel drive vehicle held down expected speeds. He said he and the car designer, Ken Wallis, had not considered high track temperatures.
Granatelli said that after the Novi-powered race car he sponsored crashed in qualifications at the Speedway, he made a "'major decision - ’ to not attempt to revive the Novi and instead to go “all out” in building a turbo-car for the 1967 race. Piloted by Parnelli Jones of Torrance, Calif., the turbo-car whooshed out of the pack on the second turn of the first lap of the 1967 race, and left the field far behind. But the car, which cost $350,000 to build, was forced out of the race in the last few laps because of gear-box difficulties. Granatelli testified that following the 1966 race, he offered the Novi engine to the Chamoion Sparkplug Co., and began building a chassis for the engine. Granatelli said Champion never cojnpleted its end of the bargain.
