1967 Was A Big Year For Archeologists
Personal and Local news
ROME UPI — Italian archeologists were hard at work in the Mediterranean area during 1967. It was a year in which they made important discoveries in five foreign lands and on two of their own islands. In a summary of work carried out during the year under its direction, Italy’s National Council for Research singled out what it called “significant discoveries’’ in Syria, Egypt, the Sudan, Tunisia. Malta, Sicily and Sardinia. Excavators at Tell Mardiky in Syria brought to light the ancient city’s wall, which dates back to the third century before Christ. Digging in Tell Mardikh’s ancient royal palace, the archaeologists also uncovered a large courtyard and several
rooms, as well as various sculptures in stone, and terra cotta statues. At Antinoe in Egypt excavations were carried out around the temple of Ramses II, who reigned from 1292 to 1225 B.C. In addition to successfully dating the ruins. Italian teams discovered fragments of large wine jars that the Greeks brought to Egypt centuries later. The remains of an early church were discovered at Sonqi Tino ni The Sudan. Built during the Nubian domination of the area, it was made of brick. On its walls were several well preserved frescoes. Excavating on Tunisia's Cape Bon coast, the Italians found remains of the ancient Roman
cities of Mraissa and Dagla. They also found a Carthaginian fortress at Ras Fortas.

DEAR HELOISE: Just what can a woman do outside of painting her kitchen window sill every three months where she sets those little odds and ends used daily around the house? The funny thing about this is that our kitchen is painted only once every three years and all i but the window sill still looks beautiful. MOTHER • * * DEAR MOTHER: Many people have recommended using wax. However, painters write in 1 that wax cannot be painted over because the paint won’t stick until the wax has been removed with a solvent. The easiest answer 1 have is to take some plastic wrap, cut it to fit the window sill and spread it on with your hands. Then wring out a warm sponge that has been dipped in hot water and smooth away. The plastic will keep water and rusty cans from ruining the paint on your sill and will NOT show. I also find this wonderful under potted plants, especially if the pots are the metal type that often rust. HELOISE
DEAR HELOISE: When I was making a doubleknit sweater, the two threads kept twisting around each other. I would hold up the knitted garment to let the thread unwind. My husband suggested that I place the balls of yarn on a Lazy Susan and turn the yarn instead. This is so much more satisfactory and much easier to do. MRS. GLENN GRIMM * * • Now who’s dizzy? Let’s let it be “Lazy Susan” and not us. It works, gals. And do we love Mrs. Grimm? I’ll say we do. . . HELOISE * • * DEAR HELOISE: When making egg salad, I use my pastry blender for chopping those hard-boiled eggs. The same blender also slices eggs nicely for salad toppings in case one doesn’t have an egg slicer. MRS. A. AVRAMAUT * * • DEAR HELOISE: I use pipe cleaners to make ! “hangers” for my little girl’s i tiny doll clothes. They are so easy to shape and the doll clothes do not slip off at all. MARGIE ANN * * • DEAR HELOISE: When your sponge mop wax ; applicator gets old and tough, try using a soft cloth around the sponge, secure it to the handle with rubber bands and wax away! I think mine works even bet-
ter than the sponge did when it was new. MAEVE * * * Gal. a piece of an old nylon stocking works wonderfully, too. Just cut a “tube” from the cent6F . • HELOISE * * • DEAR HELOISE: I save aluminum pans that sweet rolls come in and find them great when broiling our steaks and chops. They can be cleaned easily, and if you don’t happen to feel like cleaning them, just throw them out. POLL YKENNEDY * * • DEAR HELOISE: When I have to go downton on rainy days to pick up a few odds and ends. I take a plastic bag with me in my coat pocket. I put it over the package and the items inside stay nice and dry on my way home. JOANNE MANDANO * * * You're right. What makes me mad is that I didn't think of it m'seM HELOISE
Attendence Of Church Drops
NEW YORK UPI - Average attendance in the Episcopal Church is steadily decreasing, especially in big city areas, according to a recent report of the denomination’s General Division of Research and Field Study. The report, carried in The Episcopalian, said baptized membership of the Church increased 2.6 per cent in the years 1963-66. Average attendance at Sunday services in the Church’s eight provinces in those years dropped from 48.6 per cent of the baptzied membership in 1963 to 44.9 per cent in 1966. The rt/jxij't said the trend may be partially explained by the decreasing birth rate in the Unitde States since 1957.
Growing City Near Phoenix LITCHFIELD PARK. Ariz. UPI — The population of this new city rising near Phoenix climbed over 50 per cent in 1967, as the head count rose from 540 to 850. Projected population is between 75,000 and 100.000 when the city is completed in 20 years. The city planners hope to build 350 new homes in 1968, and see the population more than double as homebuilding hits full stride.
