The Central National Bank is observing its 85th year of banking this week. Rex Thorlton gathered up some information about the Greencastle area which I'm sure you'll find as interesting as I did. * * * On February 28, 1883, the Central National Bank was established in Greencastle and the early minutes record a room was rented for temporary occupancy on South Indiana Street in the first block, for a rental cost of $20.00 per month for six months. Plans for a permanent home (where the bank building now stands) were culminated in the purchase of Lot 101 on the southwest corner of the square from George S. Durham for $4,012.50. A search in the old original bank ledgers reveal many interesting historical facts about the early business conditions in Greencastle. The community was a thriving industrial and agricultural area such as it is today. Numbered among the many successful businesses was the Renick and Curtis Carriage Company located on the site now used as the Catholic Church; they made a popular "Jump Seat" Carriage, sort of a disappearing rumble seat. The Gillespie family operated a tannery west of town. The Harris Milling Company operated a flour mill where Poor & Co. are now located. Thomas Wilson operated an Iron Foundry just east of the site now used by the Poor Ele-

vator.

Lueteke's Bakery, operated by the father of Albert and Harry Lueteke, was just north and east of the Iron Works. The Hillis Stone Quarry was a short distance east of the present City Park. The Limedale brick kilns were about a mile west of the junction of the Monon and Pennsylvania Railroads. There were several woodworking plants in the north of the town of Greencastle, and Birch Brothers operated a woolen mil about where the Angwell Curtain Company now is located. Daggy's pork packing plant was just across Jackson Street. The Goulding and Ireland planing mill about where the Angwell Curtain Company now rative woodwork with "Curlicues" for verandas, stairs, doorways, etc. At the west edge of town the Brockway Brothers made shovel and fork handles from the fine local hardwoods. J. W. Cole built the first electric light plant in town south of the Pennsylvania tracks. Mr. Cole also built the ice plant which the Gardner Brothers later operated for several years. Greencastle also had a street car railway in those days, consisting of two horse-drawn cars which operated between the railroad stations in the north and south sides of the town. The first telephone company wa* organized by James B. Nelson in 1880. Land prices were booming in 1883. In the Manhattan neighborhood, Levi Friend sold his farm to John Rightsell for $7,000 or about $60 an acre. Lycurgus Stoner bought the old Mercer farm for about $38 an acre. Francis Lyon bought Henry Fellows farm of 55 acres for $50 an acre. The Central National Bank minute$ of the board meeting in 1893 reveal the leadership of the bank was under the care of prominent Putnam County citizens who were active and influential in community affairs. The Bank Board at that time was cotpposed of R. L. O'Hair, President; M. D. Bridges, Cashier; James L. Randel, a young man who had beeri assisting his father, and Harry M. Randel, the Putnam County Auditor, as Assistant Cashier. Other members of the board were: Frank A. Arnold, publisher of the weekly Star-Democrat; Silas A. Hays, one of the leading attorneys in Indiana; Ezra B. Evens, a widely known and successful physician; M. F. McHaffie, a prominent and respected livestock breeder and farmer, and Quenton Broadstreet, the leading insurance and real estate broker of Greencastle. P. O. Colliver, attorney and later county judge, and David Houck, prominent farmer, were also members of the board for a time. Currently the bank's affairs are under the direction and leadership of Fred L. O'Hair, Chairman of the Board; Dale K. Teaford, President; Robert H. O'Hair, Woodson A. Darnall, D. W. Killinger, Kenneth E. West and Harry D. Moore, also members of the Board of Directors. The public is invited to stop in and look over some of the old bank records, pictures, cancelled checks of the 1883 period and other bank historical records on display in the bank lobby.

The saluki is perhaps the oldest known breed of domesticated

dogs.
