DePauw captured one first place ribbon in the event. It was a victory in the 600-yard run by sophomore Scott Shafer. The Severna Park, Md. runner tour- 1 ed the 165-yard dirt track in 1:14.4. He also took fourth in
Auburn, Ashley and Waterloo for the current school year. South Newton, the winner at North Newton, was formed a year earlier. The others, all recent mergers, were LaVille, North Miami, Wainwright, L& M, Northfield and Eastern Han-
cock.
All were formed in the 1962 with the exception of L & M Lyons and Marco, which made
its debut in the 1950s.
The exceptions among the brand-new first-round winners were Fort Wayne Catholic, Mount Vernon Posey and Lowell, but Lowell and Mount Vernon also profited from the
steadily dwindling field.
Mount Vernon for many years was bunched into the Evansville “death trap.” Two years ago,
the Wildcats found
some breathing room when they
shifted to Princeton.

DETROIT UPI—Defenseman Howie Young, one-time “bad boy” of the National Hockey League, has been recalled by the Detroit Red Wings from their Fort Worth, farm club in the Central League. Young, 30, appeared in 47 games with the Wings this season before being sent down Feb. 9. In 47 games with Detroit, he scored two goals and assisted on 14 others.
