A Woman's View

By GAT PAULJfiV NEW YORK UPI —Kristine Phillips is a small town girl who has accomplished more in her 19 years than some people manage in a lifetime. Consider. She is a accomplished pianist and organist, expert on both snow and water skis, makes many of her clothes. is a crack fisherwoman, an airplane pilot, member of a debating team, was valedictorian of her high school class and

is on the dean’s honor list In college where she is studying to be a doctor. Beyond all this, this wellrounded teen-ager has won a number of titles for her blonde, blue-eyed beauty, topped by being selected number one in the swimsuit competition at last year’s Miss America pageant in Atlantic City. “People are impressed with a title,” said Miss Phillips. "But by now, they ought to know

f I’m normal like anyone else. Miss Phillips talked of what it’s like to be a beauty titlist ; “boy, the self-confidence it teaches you” as when she began her latest venture. She’s doing a series of organ concerts for veterans in Bethesda Naval Hospital, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Malcolm Grow Memorial Hospital at Andrews Air Force base, Philadelphia Naval Hospital, and Valley Forge General Hospital.

The American Red Cross and Hammond Organ Co. are sponsors of the tour. Miss Phillips said many of the hospitalized are back from Vietnam, and since this was her first such assignment, she wasn't sure of her reaction to seeing the wounded en masse. Her father, an optometrist in her native Rupert, Idaho, was an Air Force pilot shot down over Germany in World War H and veteran of nearly two years in a prisoner of war camp. *T worked out a line of patter to go along with the music," she said. “When I accepted this assignment, I asked all the boys

at Sigma Nu (the fraternity: had named her its annual “sweetheart”) to collect some jokes for me. There was only one clean enough to use. So I wrote my own material.” As one of the Miss America contestants, she got a college scholarship and gets paid for personal appearances. “But if Hammond hadn’t offered money, I’d have done this for free,” she said. Miss Phillips has studied piano since she was seven and started organ lessons eight years ago. She is only one hour short of eligibility for her pilot’s license; her dad owns a small
