Card of thanks I wish to express my sincere thanks to everyone who performed an act of kindness or paid tribute to my beloved wife, Jessie Lane, at her passing. Every act of kindness and sympathy has been highly appreciated. And to the staff of the Eventide Rest Home, nurses, nurse aids, for the excellent care you gave her during her past five years, I thank you. It has been my observation that the pay check for your efforts was not the goal for which you labored, but with your love and humanity you gave of yourself with a sympathetic and loving care, that you might make your patient’s life more worthwhile, and In so doing I assure you that you not only enriched the lives of your patients, but also that of your own and those who have loved ones in your care. O. Bruce Lane i

Opening lead—king of spades. This hand appeared in an Olympic contest many years ago. The problem is to make twelve tricks with the South hand against a spade lead and the best possible defense, declarer being permitted to see all four hands. South appears to have two certain losers — a heart and a diamond. The trick is to make one of these losers disappear. Declarer wins the spade with the ace and immediately ruffs a spade. If he makes any other play at trick two. he goes down. He continues -with a trump to
FAMOUS HANDS the king, ruffs another spade, and enters dummy with a club to the ace, to ruff the last spade. Declarer next crosses to the king of diamonds and ruffs a club, after which he returns to dummy with another diamond and ruffs still another club. Ten tricks having been played, this
is the position:

South leads the six of diamonds and East has to win the trick. Moreover, East is compelled to return a club. Declarer ruffs with the ten, placing West in a highly uncomfortable position. The best he can do is resign. If he overruffs, South makes the last two tricks with the A-J of hearts. If he underruffs, South makes the last two tricks with the A-10 of hearts. West’s queen of hearts is smothered either way. His sure trump trick turns out to i>e only a mirage. It is squeezed out of existence.

Are you having trouble finding a big enough break in traffic to get your automobile out of the driveway? Well, don't expect things to get better. U.S. Government forecasts indicate that there will be 126 million licensed drivers in the United States by 1975. We already have over 100 million drivers. Where, oh where, are we all going to go? 4 4 4 Honesty is the best policy. This old adage took on a new twist for an insurance company a few weeks ago when a Virginia woman called to say that she was returning $611.50, the balance of a claim paid ten years ago. In 1958, the woman received $725 from her insurance company after she reported that her jewelry was missing from her home. But she later found some of the jewelry and reimbursed $113.50 to the company. Last week she found the remaining jewelry and returned the balance. "I am still mysti* tied how it could have been so long in my safe deposit box without my finding it," she said. It's too bad that this lady isn't in politics. 4 4 4 How can a college student gain experience In publishing while still in school? Mademoiselle maga* zine has a unique program (its College Board) that enables students to participate in some of the maga* zine's activities. This year DePauw University will be represented on the magazine's College Board by Juliann Bergmann and Julie Braden. Each College Board member will have an opportunity to contribute to the magazine and help them keep abreast of cam* pus trends. College Board members report regularly to the magazine on events at their colleges, research articles and help the fashion editors select models for college fashion features. Each girl will remain on the College Board until she graduates. During this time, she will accumulate a professional portfolio of work submitted to Mademoiselle which may well b« valuable to her in finding a challenging job after graduation. Congratulations, girls! Just goes to prove what we have always said: "We're lucky to have DePauw and all of its students here in Greeneastle.
Hey, did you see where Congressman Richard L. Roudebush (R-Ind.) disclosed that the Johnson administration has earmarked $200,000 for the purchase of tickets to sagging Broadway shows. "This is a perfect example of the concern this administration has for the taxpayers of the country," Roucfebush commented. "It's business as usual at the White House," Roudebush added, "and, that means that every hare-brained spending scheme imaginable will be funded despite the war and inflation." Roudebush also said, "if Johnson wants to support Broadway I suggest he dig into his own pocket; he's worth $15 million according to the newspapers." Roudebush also said the Johnson administration approved this $200,000 Federal grant through its new National Endowment for the Arts Department, a Federal agency. The taxpayer funds will be used to buy tickets to Broadway flops to keep them running longer. If this is true, it just doesn't seem possible that our present administration would have the gall to ask Congress to raise taxes on the American people while at the same time shoveling Federal funds down the rathole on such projects as buying tickets for Broadway flops. But then who knows, we, the people, do foolish things sometimes. Regardless of whether or not wo like our present President, the fact still remains that we (you and me) are the only reason he is in tho White House today. So, remember if you kick him, you may as well bend over and give yourself one at the same time. Unless, of course, you didn't vote for him to begin with.
