DePauw Tigers stun State's Sycamores, 98-84
DePauw’s Tigers pulled off! the biggest upset of the ICC season Saturday night, taking down the nation’s fifth ranked small college club, Indiana State, 98-84. DePauw never trailed in the tense struggle though the Sycamores almost obliterated a 19point DePauw second half lead with a late flurry. But the eventual winners applied the skids when the score reached 86-84 and plunked in nine consecutive points. That’s all it took to end virtually State’s high championship hopes. And that’s all it took to send some 2,000 unusually excited Tiger fans home deliriously happy, talking to themselves about what has to rank among DePauw’s all-time victories. For DePauw the win means a 4-3 loop reading and a 9-6 season mark. It means the Tigers still have four more home ICC games and another on the road at St. Joe to fatten up on. The next test comes here Wednesday night when Ball State arrives. Tipoff time for this battle will be 8 p.m. with the freshman game to go at 6 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with seats on a first come first served basis.

He went all the way. Leading scorer Tom McCormick added 12 points though he sat out 15 minutes of the last half wiien he picked up his fourth personal early in the second stanza. Actually, McCormick's departure had a happy, happy ending, for 6-7 junior Mike O'Connell entered the fray and proceeded to turn in a 17point second half. Need more be said! O’Connell remained in the game to the end. McCormick never got back in until Jim Jackson and State’s Rich Mason
utes with an injury.
State cut the margin to 83-74 before Mason was called for fouling Dale Barrett on an attempted layup with 3:28 left.
Matters were to get even more critical though the violence was over. Don Weirich hit from out front for State and when O Connell missed on Fred Hardman's personal, Newsom added his 13th basket for an 85-80 score. DePauw then froze the

JACK THE SLAKERr—DePauw’s Jim Jackson could have well been the rebounding slaker for the Tigers Saturday night, that is while he was in the game. Jackson brought the spirited crowd to their feet with cheers everytime he literally cleared the boards against Indiana State advenaries like Jerry Newsom (41) and Mike Phillips (51). Jackson was ejected from the contest after a tussle with State’s Rich Mason.
