Parents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. Norris Rogers, Ladoga. The mother of the bridegroom is Mrs. Dorothy Friars of Roachdale. I find that if I make up my grocery list in one color then use a different color to mark off items as I go around the store, it is easier to see what else I still have to buy. • • • ■ Dear Heloise: While searching for the whisk broom to clean the car rug. my eye fell on a new bowl brush I had just bought. So I decided to use that. Well, It worked ever so much better than the whisk broom. Since It has a contour shape, it fit the curve of the car floor and its long handle made it easy to clean up under the front seat. I now keep one of these brushes just for this purpose. Mrs. G. C.

FT. RUCKER, Ala. UPI — In 1861, a corporal in the Union Army drew $14 a month and

12 pounds of straw.

Today’s counterpart gets anywhere from $117 to $223 a

month, and no straw.

The rigors of the Union army allowance scale were revealed in a book called “Revised Army Regulations for the Army of 1861” discovered by Lt. Col. Donald E. Chamberlain in his

j father’s belongings.

The 12 pounds of straw the j 1861 corporal received were for I bedding. If he had a horse, the | horse got 100 pounds of straw. ! The regulations also offered

I culinary commands:

“Bread must be thoroughly baked and not eaten until it is cold. Soup must be boiled for

at least five hours.”

A non-commissioned officer using profanity in church would be fined 17 cents at the first offense and given 24 hours in the stockade the second time. He could be lashed for deser-

tion.

On the other end of the scale, a major general was authorized to have seven horses in war I time — but only three in peace-

time.
