By HORTENSE MYERS I INDIANAPOLIS UPI — A pilot project underway in Indiana and three other states will mean a new pattern for high school home economics courses which takes into account increased numbers of working mothers and younger marriages.; A report on the project came from Prof. Phyllis K. Lowe, chairman of home economics ed-
ucation at Purdue University. She is the director of the Purdue portion of the experiment, the findings of which will be used in revamping courses some-: time after 1970. Teachers from six high schools in Indiana, two in Ohio,! three in New York and one in Connecticut will go to the Purdue campus at West Lafayette March 4-22 for workshops in the |
special courses they will teach in their own schools in the 196869 school year. The pilot program is financed by a $144,000 U.S. Office of Education grant, and based on what experimental courses prove the most successful. Other high schools across the nation are expected to make adaptations In their classes. “Society is changing and an
increasing number of women hold a dual role of homemaker and wage earner,” Prof. Lowe said. "A corresponding change in men’s roles in the family demands special attention. The roles of men and women are tending to become more equal in younger families.” She said the customary course gives about three-fourths of the time to sewing and cooking. "Increased emphasis needs to be given to home management, buying, child rearing, housekeeping, nutrition and interpersonal relationships,” she said, j
( Miss Lowe, who was a voca- : tional home ec teacher in Missouri and a cost accountant In ; the Army before going to Purdue in 1953, said one course to be tried will be for girls who expect to work outside their homes after marriage and anj other will be directed toward | girls who are not planning on working outside the home. More effort will be made to get boys interested in the newlook home ec courses. Aim of these courses, Miss Lowe said, is to assist the future fathers “to gain a better understanding^’
of the role he may be expected to take as a wage-earner and as a sharer in home responsibilities with a working wife. Mrs. Jane Seed, Hobart, director of the women's and children’s division of the Indiana Department of Labor, said her latest information is that 35.4 per cent of the national labor force consists of working mothers—about 15 million. She said, however, that these figures would be higher in the iner city schools where the new | home ec courses are to be given their test runs.
Miss Lowe said the individual i schools cannot be named yet but tentative plans call for the | courses to be taught in three In- ! dianapolis high schools, two in South Bend and one in Gary. In addition, high schools in Syracuse and Buffalo, N. Y.; | Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio, and either New Haven or ; Bridgeport, Conn., are expected to take part in the test run for the school year beginning in September. The teachers will get supervision throughout the year from
home ec staff people from Purdue, Ohio State or Cornell Universities.
BLESSINGS PORT WASHINGTON, N. Y. UPI—Mrs. Grace F orgione told police a man, wearing a moustache and a goatee, came to her door and told her a friend had sent him “to bless the house.” She said she let the man roam through the house, pronouncing blessings.
